OoT is possibly my favorite game of all time. What am I missing about Majora's Mask? Why do you love it?

I have played only a small segment of the game, but I did beat 2 dungeons.

1. the dungeons - oh lawd the dungeons be cray. Seriously, they're awesome

2. it's unique - every Zelda story is more or less the same...this one doesn't even take place in hyrule, there is no triforce as far as I'm aware, there is no Zelda.

3. Time Travel - probably the most ingenious, creative device put in any game. I can't believe they pulled it off like they did. Essentially, you have 3 days to do what you're doing, before the world ends. You can let the world end or travel back to the beginning of the first day

I get time travel mechanic in the game....except how the bank keeps my money throughout time.

Maybe they explain that in the game. I forget.

3. See now that stresses me the shite out. I feel like I'm on a time crunch and I can't get it all done in time and I have to start over from scratch. Am I missing something?

The part that stressed me out about it and caused me to never give it a fair shake. And the fact that it doesn't involve Zelda, Hyrule, or triforce makes it even more compelling. I don't have issue with pretty much the same story all the time, but it's good to branch out now and then.

I don't think there's a way to beat the game with all the masks without at least some outside help using a guide or internet or something.

yeah, it's a bit of a stresser, but you take you're time, it's trial and error...it's basically rehearsing to do it in x amount of time

it's about how you approach it.

to your other point, I agree, it's fricking hard why I never really stayed with it, plus I was like 14...i'll play it and beat it on 3ds...since it's a handheld I can play at night when my wife is asleep

A greater number of Minor keys are played over Major keys. Therefore the game leaves you feeling lost and hopeless with a LITERAL ever impending doom bringing back the fog of disrepair, just when you start making headway.

If Girls Gone Wild would make a video game, it would be Majora's Mask.

Play the Song of Time backwards. You'll thank me.

Non gameplay related: the characters are great. The time mechanic makes you care about characters' problems and feel attachment to them.

The side questing system is amazing, the best in any zelda game so far. You can beat the dungeons and beat the game or you can do the side quests too and really take advantage of how cool the time mechanic actually is.

You have to embrace the fact that you are making progress even though you have to reset at the end of the third day. If you came close to completing something but not quite, reset and with you new knowledge you should be able to get it the next time.

But how do you make any actual progress in the game if you have to start over every 3 days?

Because let's say you unlock a mask, and you reset, you keep the mask permanently.

Let's say you have to do a sequence to unlock a dungeon, once you complete the sequence you will unlock a song that will take you to the very mouth of the dungeon, so you reset, play the song, and boom you have 3 full game days to beat the dungeon.

If you beat a boss in a dungeon, you keep the item he gives you after a reset.

Basically anytime you achieve a milestone, you are given something that gives you permanent progress in a temporary world. So you're constantly advancing even though time is standing still. Really the beauty of the game.

it saves your masks, money, dungeons defeated, etc.

It doesn't need to make sense, just do like I'm doing and go buy it.

I have a 3ds and I have only Zelda games

OoT - the definitive version IMO

The reason I love the game is that it is the most apocalyptic and debatably darkest game of all time. I know many of you are thinking Resident Evil, Bioshock, Doom, etc as the candidates for darkest game ever, but shite has really already hit the fan in most of those games. It hasn't happened yet in Majora's Mask, and these people whose lives have been ruined by Majora and slowly realize that they are all going to die. And you watch this repeatably and are mostly helpless to help these people until closer to the end of the game. The game is uncomfortable and restraining, but it's designed to be such so you can understand what the characters are really going through and bond with them.

Plus Majora is probably the most effective antagonist of all time. His plan is perfect, save for one thing: a boy with a time machine comes from another dimension to stop him; he could not have accounted for this. Plus he's a sadist to such a degree that even the Joker would blush. Thinking of everything he does, I can't think of a video game villain with a more horrifying resume.

In short, Majora's Mask is the Groundhogs Day and Empire Strikes Back of video games. It never tries to be Ocarina and does something completely different. That was off putting to some, but I personally loved it, and I can say it's comfortably my favorite video game of all time.

But here was my idea that I typed a few years ago if they were to remake Majora's Mask for a home console, feel free to take a read: LINK

without a doubt...you can't stop playing OoT, I stopped playing MM for whatever reason...I don't doubt MM's greatness, but OoT is, IMO, the best video game ever made

I played Majora before I played Ocarina, and while I think its a fantastic game, I think Hyrule was a bit more empty than Termina and didn't have as much substance to it. Granted Hyrule is supposed to be grand and epic in scale, but I don't think Ocarina has held up as well because of that. The scale of Ocarina's Hyrule isn't as impressive as it was before. Aside from graphics, I don't think Majora has aged nearly on the same level as Ocarina has.

I think the time limit makes termina feel more populated and dense...and it is to a degree, but I think Ocarina has aged so well. Just the n64 version, the 3ds release was like preserving a piece of art...it can never be lost to time (graphics wise) that's how I feel because of the art design

The sense of hopelessness and despair, along with the stress of repeatedly-impending doom, are part of what make it great. It's a different kind of game, but still the dungeon puzzle solver type of Zelda experience you get in the other games.

Think of it as cyclical instead of linear, as an Eastern philosophical experience instead of the traditional Western temporality. Your actions have karmic implications when you're "reborn" every three days. It's the wheel of time, not the river of time.

That, and the ending is still somewhat hopeless and depressing. I'd like to play another story in Termina instead of always in Hyrule.
