I know this isn't Thursday, "Wayback Wednesday?"

1974-1975 was Higgs' freshman year. He was from Owensboro,KY. Kentucky actually offered him a scholarship back when Kentucky recruited players from Kentucky. In fact, Higgs finished runner-up to Jack Givens for "Mr. Kentucky." (Kentucky was actually in a bit of transition the year he graduated HS. UK finished 13-13 in their second year under Joe Hall for their worst record since the 30's.That was short lived as UK played UCLA for the National Title that Spring).

Higgs wanted to be "part of something special" signing with Dale and LSU. He also helped 'recruit' Rudy Macklin from Louisiville --not sure if he helped recruit Ron Abernathy .

He helped lay the foundation for the great 1978-1981 teams. The Tigers struggled in 1975 and 1976 but improved dramatically in '77 and 1978-which included the win in Baton Rouge over #1 and eventual national champ Kentucky. That team really should have been offered an NIT bid--back when that was still valued. 18-9, 12-6 in league play in the SEC would be a 6 or 7 seed in the NCAA's toady. He made either first or second team All-SEC his SO-SR yrs.

As the photo indicates if you look closely at the court and notice the seating, this game was in Nashville vs Vanderbilt. The game was regionally televised on "TVS",not to be confused with Ted Turner's TBS ,which had none other than John Ferguson doing play by play and Joe Dean doing color.Hard to imagine now,but this was LSU's only appearance on television the entire season.

I think Glen Hanson was the other leading player that season. Saw the team play live several times and they were scrappers. Finished with a bad record but defeated Duke and lost a heartbreaker by one point to UK at Pete's Palace. I think they also defeated the Russian National team which at that time was a big deal. Higgs and Hanson both went on to have nice NBA careers.

I greatly enjoyed watching Glenn Hansen at LSU but his NBA career was an abbreviated one.

Kenny was the master of never getting the 5 second out of bounds call. He had an internal clock and at 4 1/2 seconds would bounce the ball off of a defenders knees and reset the clock and play!

3 yrs in the NBA for a 6' 4" white guy with floppy hair and more heart than talent was pretty damn good, IMO. Nobody said he was a HoFer.

Wasn't dissing the guy. If I had bounced the ball three times during an actual NBA game I would make sure everyone knew of my solid pro career.

Kenny Higggs was the bridge between the Hustlers and the Fantastic climb to the top. Wish he would have had one more season so he could have shared in some of the glory when the program finally turned the corner.

In Higgs' SR season, 1977-1978, LSU defeated Vanderbilt 77-55 (scoring the last 15 pts of the game) handing Vandy at the time their worst loss ever in Memorial Gym to a team not named "Kentucky.". LSU's first win in Nashville since an 87-85 win in 1971.
