Did your parents force you to clean your plate as a kid?

Someone on my facebook just posted that they made their kid sit at the dinner table from dinner time (6pm) until it was time for bed (10pm) because she refused to clean her plate (kid is 7 or so).

When I was a kid, my parents never made me eat everything on my plate. What say the rest of you? This parent's approach just seemed extreme to me.

Yes

But knowing now how bad of an epidemic child obesity is, that is just irresponsible parenting.

I was a super skinny kid though and it was usually just vegetables left

Yep. Would sit there and watch me eat (swallow with drink not chew) my broccoli and cauliflower

My Dad put a timer on me and said I better finish before that timer ran out. I never found out what would happen if it did

If they need to eat their veggies I understand.

But if its other items on the plate and they just aren't hungry, its really dumb to make a kid over eat when their body says they are not hungry.

Now, it is also ok if the kid has a history of saying their full just so dessert comes earlier

ETA:

It also worked if my mom would say, "well if you're too full to eat your dinner, we are not having dessert". Then the food would vanish.

Yep.

Don't you dare put a dirty dish in the dishwasher.

My dad made us scrape them bastards clean.

A 7 year old should eat what they're told to by their parents IMO. If the kid didn't want to waste 4 hours, it should have eaten its dinner.

My parents didn't make me, and I'm a fairly picky eater because of it. My inlaws are doing the same thing with their 10 year old. The kid eats nothing but tacos for dinner and is super picky. He won't try any good food. I will not be doing that to my children.

Making your kids eat past the point where they are full is bad parenting IMO

I was given the choice between cleaning my plate or getting the hickory switch. I cleaned my plate, even those nasty beets.

He mentioned it was broccoli that she was refusing to finish. But making the kid sit there for 4 hours? Come on.

How can you hate beets? They're amazing.

it is the kid's decision not to eat the broccoli

I agree you should force them to eat kinds of foods, but not amounts.

I can't stand shithead kids who only eat chicken nuggets and French fries cause mommy and daddy are pussies
