People keep writing this as if the players don't do anything to "earn" their scholarships. They exchange vast amounts of time under the mandate of the football program to increase athletic skills that few in the general populace possess, ie there really aren't many guys capable of playing high level ball. They subject themselves to injury daily which affects many of them later in life. How much time in a given year do they really have to work part time given what athletic programs demand from them these days? And this supposed benefit of working with highly paid coaches and support people to better their skills, how many benefit from that after college? The measley number that make it to the NFL or go into coaching?

Not saying pay players, but many of the athletes do come from families with very limited financial means, and some of the NCAA rules in-place really limit what can be done for them in times of challenging circumstances.
