Exactly.
Arbitrary Rule: OK.
Arbitrary Rule arbitrarily applied: Not OK.

Like I said:

Caveat: We all know the NFL can and will do anything they want with this. I just don't see, yet, where any action they take could be traced back to real evidence of much of anything other than a couple of data points plucked out of all context.

OK all - I think I've stated my case pretty clearly.

It will be fun to see how the NFL twists its logic to settle this one while ESPN and the other media outlets work to get as much out of it as they can.

Yes, I'm a Pats fan and it's good to be a Pats fan.

In the meantime: peace out.

One, an nfl official almost always have their hands on the balls at the beginning and end of every play. These guys handle balls all the time and at record levels on Monday night. Could they not tell the difference? This is such a farce
FIFY

It's not the officials damn job. They have seconds to spot the ball, throw in a new ball or use same ball, and correctly place the ball on a hash mark or where it needs to be spotted. Not once are they ever squeezing the ball like a player does. Every throw is underhand and most of them are wearing gloves in cold, rainy environments. Your argument is ridiculous

quote:

Two, an nfl rep should be checking these things throughout the games

No, it is not their job. The teams are responsible for the management of their own footballs. End of story. It's a rule that's been in place for years.

This is the second time this regime has been caught cheating (who knows how many other times they have cheated and got away with it) the game trying to gain a competitive advantage.

How is the rule not applied?
NFL checked the balls ~2hrs prior to kickoff
balls given back to the teams
pats balls were not kept up to regulations (either by natural causes or manipulation)
that gave pats an unfair advantage

Yes, and it was more deflated than something that could be caused by weather.

25k fine, oh no, and let's move on from this trivial shite.

Carolina's kicker said one of the balls he had to kickoff with against the Cardinals was deflated. He asked the ref to check the ball and the ref said he isn't allowed to.

quote:

When checking the game balls, the refs check the psi indoors. This is frustrating bc the ball loses some pressure in cold weather...
During our home playoff game this year I asked the official if he could check the psi outside again bc the ball felt flat and he...
said he could not. I guess you can't blame the official for that. Rules are rules. Maybe the league will make some changes this...
offseason. Sucks kicking a flat ball tho. #BombSquadNonetheless ?

There has been tons of cold games where this was never a factor.

Don't see a lot of facts here except that some game balls MAY have been under-inflated to specification (No official NFL report, yet.)

And where are the FACTS that even prove it provided and unfair advantage?

The rule is important in its intent: to create the so-called 'even playing field'. However, it's arbitrary and can be changed like any set of rules.

My point continues to be: where are the PROOFS/FACTS that show anything improper happened outside of probabilities that have not been ruled out: poor management by NFL Officials, weather/usage conditions, etc, etc.?

Looks more like a hyped narrative feeding fuel to bunches of Patriots-haters and sore-losers, than anything else.

Caveat: We all know the NFL can and will do anything they want with this. I just don't see, yet, where any action they take could be traced back to real evidence of much of anything other than a couple of data points plucked out of all context.

Gerry Austin on Mike and Mike -

All balls from both teams were at 13psi when they left the officials LR and were given to team ballboys.

Balls were returned to LR at halftime and Indy balls were still at same psi and NE balls were under. 11 of 12 were 2 lbs under.

What a childish subject line. Such abject immaturity shouldn't be celebrated, condoned, or coddled. JMO, bro - try your best to assail.

Touche!

Still doesn't rise to the level of public groin fondling, though.

1-2 lbs psi: Is it 1 or is it 2 and how big are the differences between 1 and 1 lbs psi when it comes to application, really? Any definitive study on that? In other words, maybe it's quite normal for a well used NFL game ball to lose a pound during such use and conditions.

This is my question.

Further, did Brady or anyone ask that the balls be deflated?

Aaron Rogers is on record as saying he prefers a ball that has a little more air.

I'd like to feel what a football feels like normally and then with 1-2 lbs. taken out.

At 6'2", my hand is pretty much exactly 10". I can get a good grip on a college or high school ball. A new/slick NFL ball tests my limits. I would imagine that 1-2 lbs. might make a big difference to me. But, maybe not so much for a 6'5" Tom Brady who probably has a 10.5-11" hand size. But, then again, with the weather conditions the way they were in Foxboro, you never know.
