He'll assign readings regularly throughout the semester. That and the lectures will be the basis for the tested material.
The tests will be one or two during the semester and a cumulative final. They will comprise the bulk of your grade. The quizzes given during class will be a smaller percent of your final grade.

Sam is a great engineer, very well-respected among his peers, has very remarkable credentials, is a super-nice guy, and is one of the smartest people I have ever met.
