My 2009 Nissan Altima has a steering lock/security issue. It's not letting me start the car. Actually, it's not letting me shut off the inside lights of the blinking security light either. Supposedly this is a defect in the steering lock.

It's not a recall from what I can tell. However, Nissan did offer an extended warranty on the part.

I did purchase this car from Carmax and purchased the 100k mile/10 year warranty.

The car now has 96k miles on it. I live two hours away from the nearest Carmax dealer.

I plan on getting it towed, but I want to make sure I'm not missing anything. Can I make Carmax pay for the towing? How can I check to make sure this specific issue is covered under warranty?

Also, there are a few other issues with the car I would like them to check. It's mostly a noise coming from what sounds like the motor mount, but I'm no mechanic. Is it possible for them to look at both issues at the same time?

EDIT - I also refinanced the car with a bank for a better rate. I was told by the banker that this wouldn't affect my warranty, but I'm having some issues with my mortgage refinance already. I'm fully expecting this to end up being a "when it rains it pours" kinda thing.

Are you not eligible for the extended coverage from Nissan?

Does the Carmax warranty require the work to be done at Carmax?

Looking at the maxcare page it says to call them and they will send you to a nearby authorized repair center. Also says will reimburse towing up to 100 bucks,

From what I understand, Carmax does not require that they work on the car. Bring it to the nearest Nissan dealership and contact Carmax about the warranty work being performed.

DId you actually check with nissan on this. I believe it affected a lot of Nissans and my 2010 GT-R has a recall on it.

I assumed it had to go to Carmax. See? This is why I came here first.

Get your 17 digit VIN and call into your nearest Nissan dealer service department.

Ask them if the issue will be paid for by Nissan.

Also ask them about towing in regards to towing.

So it wasn't the steering lock issue like I thought. Turns out it's just a dead battery.

Here's the thing though - I asked for a full diagnosis and they found a recall issue and an issue with my air conditioner. Warranty should cover the air conditioner.

But what I'm upset about is that the dealership is going to charge $200 for a fricking battery replacement. They said they can't do any of the other work unless I come get the car and have the battery replaced. I need my car back this week, so I just decided to pay the $200, but I thought it was outrageous that they were charging that much to replace a damn battery.

Is it at least a good battery?

I just bought a Die Hard Gold battery for the wife's van, and it was about 150 with tax. $50 to replace it is highway robbery, but probably easier than taking it someone else, and they might not let you bring your own battery and change it yourself in their parking lot. =)

No idea. I don't know shite about cars, so when he spouted off what it was, I had no clue to even think quality of battery.

Just pissed me off since I can go into Autozone and have a Mexican guy switch em out for free.

I don't know when batteries got so outrageously expensive, but I just had to replace a battery in my Jeep and it cost $200 just for the battery- redonk.

Final update -

Walked out with $460 less in my pocket. Not bad for your average working American but pretty hard on me as a graduate student.

But anyways, warranty covered a new air compressor. New battery cost $200 and I went ahead and had the dealership do an oil change. They also fixed an oil leak in the exhaust, which was a recall. I had the car towed to the dealership and the warranty didn't cover that.

So ~$200, ~$150 (deductible), $40 for the oil change and ~$75 for the towing = cheap groceries next month.
