So far it's an easier trek than the original game. I'd expect the difficulty to ramp up shortly, but I've only used a potion one or two times going from Hollow Bastion (annoying, depressing music) to finishing Beast's castle.

The first game definitely had some difficulty spikes. I honestly did not find the Maleficent dragon fight that hard with beast in my party after summoning tinkerbell (I think I died like 4 times), but I absolutely could not defeat Ansem after the second fight with Darkside near the end of the game. It was all the more annoying due to the fact that dieing to Ansem meant you had to kill Darkside all over again. Not a hard task at all late in the game, but it was still an annoying waste of time. I leveled up from 51 to 61 and still died about 3 times before I just got lucky and beat him. After that fight, I had zero trouble the fights that came after his transformation into that giant ship thing.
