To a avoid a 2008 meltdown? IMO I think we will be OK, top 15. It seems our competition thinks we're done?

What's the Rant say?

Scoring D needs to be at least top 20. Total D, who cares? Just cause turnovers and keep people off the board.

You answered your own question. Not as bad as 2008. If we're even comparing the two at any time next year then that would qualify as being very bad.

If we get our normal LSU D, which is top 15ish in scoring D/yards per play, but hopefully a little higher, we'll be good.

If we get our best version of that LSU D, top 3ish, then we could have a season for the ages. I think either of those outcomes is more likely than a repeat of 2008. I like next year's group a lot.

If you noticed when LSU lost, they could not stop running QBs. The DTs must do a better job at stopping the run.

If LSU defense can stop the 'Ground and Pound' and running QBs, the Tigers will be in every ball game for the win. The defense will be in the top 10. Remember, no one stop OSU running game in the NCAA playoffs and the Championship game.

LSU could be 120th in total D for all I care. Scoring D is all that matters.

this reply will piss off some folks but it depends on how our QB and offense produces.

If we can produce drives and rest our players, our D will be top 10-20 and keep us in every ball game this year.

Scoring D approx 15 points per game (max 17), to make sure they win the Playoffs 13 ppg will do it. Of course our offense needs to be around 38 ppg, 42 would be great.

Yards per game needs to be +/- 300, and to win the playoffs 285 ypg (95 rushing yards and 190 passing yards should do it

Those stats would be top 5 easy maybe 8th the worst, depending on Bama, TCU, and other defensive powers. However, it could be even better but the key will be for us to score 24 points to lets say Bama's 14-19, which would be a bit over our yearly average to win the game that gets us to the playoffs

Top 15 is fine if the offense is competent.

this is correct.

Football is a team game. If we have a high scoring offense, we don't need a top 10 defense. And vice versa.

But based on what I think our O will be next year, our scoring D will need to be very, very good.

Kelly and Notre Dame planned and executed for this perfectly. they changed their QB before the game and kept our defense on the field forever. they controlled the clock by chipping away at the chavis D. it was the only way they win that game. our offense played much better and we still lost. our "bend but don't break" defense bent all the way down the field time after time after time.

Chavis is a very crebible DC but his weaknesses limit him. yes, a very powerful offense masks these weaknesses but that's true with any defense.

I believe we will have a top 3 defense in the SEC next year. Wouldn't it be so nice to have a top 7-8 offense in the SEC next year though?

If we can get a top 10 scoring D and top 30 scoring O, we'll be in the playoffs.

I think the D can get there based purely on the talent we have going into next year. The offense needs to make some huge improvements to get where we need it to be.
