Avoid arbitration. Great deal.

Lynn joined St. Louis’ rotation full-time as a 25-year-old in 2012 and has gone 48-26 with a 3.48 ERA in 97 starts while proving to be very durable. This past season he logged a career-high 204 innings with a career-best 2.74 ERA, striking out 181 batters and allowing just 13 home runs.

Saves us quite a bit over his upcoming arb years.

Now on to Scherzer.

Not really, its probably a wash. This was his first year of arb so maybe he would have gotten 4, then 7 then 11. I think its more of a thing were management doesn't want to have to prove how crappy a player is so they can pay him less in an arbitration hearing. He was a steal at 500k.

He probably could have made a little more on a year to year basis but it's a solid deal for both parties.

This year is Lynn's first crack at arbitration. He fell just days shy of being a Super-2 player and eligible for arbitration a year ago. That kept his salary close to the minimum, but allowed him to add another to his resume and enter arbitration with statistics that are rare for a first-time eligible player. He was set to eclipse Dontrelle Willis' record for salary awarded a first-time eligible pitcher, zooming beyond $4.5 million according to some estimates.

5 million and maybe 4 aren't that close when it comes to arb.

Overall, will save the Cardinals a few million versus arb.

Any time you can save some money on a top flight pitcher or player, it's great.

I thought for sure he would get 10-11 per from team on a 4 year deal(4 years 40-44mil).

i was hearing that Lynn side wanted 5 years and 60 mil. Thank god they didnt get sucked into that type of deal.

this contract gives them a lot of creativity for rest of payroll.

they learned from the Jaime Garcia deal.

Did you listen to that ESPN STL Radio segment yesterday about Scherzer? "Insiders" saying the Cards are the leaders and that Scherzer is very willing to take a bit of a hometown discount? Grain of salt, but doesn't surprise me.

Make it happen Mo.

Thats an estimate. You never know. Also you just magically jumped to 5 mil. Arbitrators aren't going to break records very easily. Willis finished 2nd in the CY the previous year.

The fact that you are stating this as fact is comical.
