VLC media player problem

Intalled the 64 bit version of VLC media player on my new computer last night... whenever I go to set up file associations, it give me a weird error message and crashes. Uninstalled it and reinstalled it. No luck. Anyone have any suggestions, useful or otherwise?

Can you use the Windows "Default Programs" feature instead? Googling /"weird error message" vlc/ returned 288,000 results, none of them useful.

I know. That's why I asked here.
Yeah, I guess I can go at it that way. Thing is, I had to get a new computer... first thing I put on it was Office 2013, then VLC. Then Itunes (which... can I say.. THE NEW VERSION SUCKS BALLS). Well, Itunes took over, and now I can't re-associate stuff with VLC. And yes, I could uninstall it and reinstall it, but where's the fun in not figuring it out a harder way?

Well, it sometimes pays to search for the exact error message in quotes. You can Ctrl+C a standard message box to copy the text, even without selecting the text.
Can't agree with you at all on iTunes, but that's another discussion. In any case, when you install iTunes, you're given the option to make it the default. VLC also gives the option. Neither will steal associations unless you allow them to.

I know. I know. I know. I got in hurry.
If I remember correctly, it might have been something about visual c++ runtime terminating in an unexpected way or something like that.
