wikipedia link
this was basically a secret special forces group of the UK in WWII that did super secret spy missions
other than having an amazing nickname (in the title), the interesting part about this is who was in the group. ian flemming, the creator of James Bond, basically used his time in teh group to create that universe. also, actor Christopher Lee (yes, he of both LOTR and the prequel trilogies) was in the group. the group also included a guy with one of the greatest war names ever (Fitzroy Maclean).
there have been some movies based loosely on missions similar to those of the group, but i don't really see much about the group itself. also, there is immense crossover/meta appeal with this story re: flemming creating the character of james bond based on this
think cross between Saving Mr. Banks and Saving Private Ryan

The Special Operations Executive (SOE) was a British World War II organisation. Following Cabinet approval, it was officially formed by Minister of Economic Warfare Hugh Dalton on 22 July 1940, to conduct espionage, sabotage and reconnaissance in occupied Europe (and later, in South East Asia also) against the Axis powers, and to aid local resistance movements.

they didn't really do spy missions, the basterds were the worst part of the movie, and none went on to become super famous and base their career on experiences in the war

Operation Kino was a spy mission headed up by Winston Churchill.

Donny's dad went on to become a famous movie producer though. Does that count?
