It's hard to imagine someone walking away from Kai, but Fin Rayner, the dog's former owner, told The Daily Record that she had her reasons. Rayner, 39, arranged online to buy Kai, originally named Pluto, for $600, but said the dog she went to pick up at the train station wasn't the same one she was promised.

The woman eventually decided to take the shar-pei for a test walk, but the seller demanded a deposit first. Rayner returned to find the seller had vanished, leaving her with Kai.

Needing to catch a train home, and unsure of what to do with the dog, Rayner said she decided to tie the pup up and notify a station employee.

Since abandoning an animal is an offense under Scotland's Animal Health and Welfare Act, Rayner could be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life. Authorities have not said if they will place a ban on the woman.
