CBA rumblings: MLS and the MLS Players Union aren't set to resume negotiations for another 10 days or so, but that hasn't stopped the league from floating some trial balloons to teams, in terms of possible new roster classifications. One interesting item multiple sources have mentioned is what's being called the "Super Max Designated Player." The name is something of a misnomer, as it refers to medium-sized DPs whose total maximum outlay (yearly salary plus transfer fee plus anything else) is around $750,000. With the salary cap presumed to be going up, the idea is to not spend those funds on players already in the league. A $250,00 player isn't all of a sudden going to be worth $350,000, or so the thinking goes. Rather, the intention is to spend those funds on a higher caliber of player coming into the league. There has been talk that such a slot would be in addition to the current Designated Player classification. Keep in mind, this is all very preliminary. No one I spoke to said this had come up in the CBA negotiations, but enough sources brought the topic up that at minimum, it appears to be something the league is considering.

Other rumors are decreasing roster size, but allowing the extra players to be on an MLB style up/down contract. So you can call up players when necessary from your affiliate of II team.
This would be interesting for me.

I don't really care about a 4th DP spot at the moment. Salary cap NEEDS to go up.

As it is now, young players are getting peanuts compared to what they could get in Europe and that is where the focus should be for MLS; getting young guys to stay in the league. MLS is also lowballing college guys that have declined offers from MLS to come out this year.

Everyone that isn't a DP is underpaid. Adding a 4th DP would only get a few more stars in the league because few teams even have 3 DPs. Raising the salary cap would allow for more above average players as well as young players to come into/stay in the league.

I know that's probably tongue in cheek, but I think Garber has been good for the league. Slow steady growth is the way to go. No need to rush things. We don't need another NASL Cosmos type league meltdown.

Slow and steady to an extent, but its now 20 years and investment and popularity now trump back in the 70's.

The we will be a top league by 2022 claims won't happen with our current set up as it doesn't attract top players.

Will it ever be a top league? Most likely no due to no champions league and the franchise model, salary cap, mls owning the contracts etc. But that won't stop it from becoming a popular and exciting league like in Brazil. Making MLS players a great export to Europe.

Investment yeah. Popularity... probably not. Cosmos sold out 70k seat stadiums. Yeah, the sport is getting more popular here but that hasn't translated to MLS as much as one would hope... yet.

What smaller leagues do attract top players, though? Let's be real here. No one is leaving Europe in their prime to go play in Argentina.

I would be ok with this, and obviously it would be good for the development of the Nats.

Increased salary cap is the most important thing, IMO. Maybe even add a fourth DP slot for the teams that can afford it.

Yeah. The salary cap absolutely has to be increased.
