I can't speak for the story because I couldn't get past the gameplay. Hated the shooting in it. Tried on 3 different occasions.
HL2 story is sort of up front but still "what the crap is going on". The story behind G-Man is, IMO, the biggest gaming mystery out there, and I'm dying to find out.

Depending on how much time you have to play per day you could beat both or not have enough time to beat Mass Effect. Both are great but I would go with Mass Effect. Mass Effect 2 is even better and probably my favorite game of all time.

The game play is clunky but the story made me look passed it.
I was fascinated with what happened to Saren and why he went nuts, it was awesome when it all unfolded at the end.

This is one hundred percent dependent on how old the gamer is.
I'm only 26, but I still remember playing the original Half Life and being blown away. That is going to help shape my view on Half Life 2.

See, I played a bit of HL a few times but never got super into it and never finished. I can't even remember how I got Half Life 2. Might have come with Day of Defeat Source or something. I have no memory of intentionally buying it. But couldn't stop playing from the moment I got off the train.
