That's going to be the case for pretty much any hire we make.
Coaches move on all the time but most fall between someone like Smart and Chavis/Bud Foster, etc.
Kirby is looking for a stepping stone and that is pretty much public info now. While the position might be used as one, I have zero interest in someone who has basically acknowledged it as such.

yeah ambition is just something you don't want in your football coach

I disagree - Someone improving their stock exactly what I want- I want someone in a contract year trying to get paid. I don't want this to be their dream job, and they just come here to enjoy what they always wanted and take it easy.

This is stupid. That means he's hungry so he would be all in with us for those 2-3 years. Right now I'll take that.

So Hanny said that Smart is the guy? Or that is another rumor?
And LOL @ anyone that says no because of the stepping stone excuse. Would you rather have a complacent DC? Any young, top level assistant want to be a HC. It's the business.
Does Smart have any fat LB recruits he can bring with him?

So you want someone who will lie to you?

So you would tell your interviewer that the main reason you want the job your interviewing for is so you can gain experience and get another job somewhere else because it shows ambition?
Give me a fricking break!
It doesn't show ambition; it shows a lack of commitment.
And I want someone who doesn't just play their hardest in a contract year.
Agreed. You don't need Bud Foster, but you don't need a DC out recruiting when it's common knowledge he is only where he is at until something better comes along.
It can, and should be a factor of motivation for everyone, but when it is the most important factor there's a difference.
A liar makes a better recruiter than someone who is out telling everyone they don't plan on staying where they are at so if you HAVE to marginalize it, and (things being generally equal) I have the choice of a liar who acts invested in his current position and someone else who doesn't, I will take the liar.

I don't expect Wilson to stay forever, nor do I think he should but if the main reason to take a job is so you can jump to another job; no thanks.
That means he's hungry so he would be all in with us for those 2-3 years. Right now I'll take that

An ambitious Kirby Smart would be perfect. For his career to advance, LSU's D would have to show improvement. Think about it, if we don't show improvement, who is going to want him as a head coach?
If we improve enough on D for him to get a HC job in 1 or 2 years, we'll be happy to promote from within, just like Nick will probably do if he loses Kirby.

it depends on what is currently available.. keep that in mind.
people can stiff you at any time..
you can't trust contracts these days.. nothing is guaranteed..
i would still want the best for the program at this moment. it seems to be a win win right now, but it's whatever. LSU can replace a coordinator, they are a great enough program with stability to do so.

You tell them you want to continue to improve and advance within the company, but that doesn't apply here.
You have a really bad argument and should just stop.

I don't want to marry them- don't need commitment just need them to do a great job.
Every interview I have been in we discussed what the potential for advancement was- it is poor planning to otherwise.

drawing comparing between the coaching profession and the real world is dumb in general

Then why did you do it?
Telling people you want another job so you can use that job to get a better job doesn't make you ambitious; it makes you look uncommitted and it's the first thing that will be told to recruits by other schools.

lol am I doing it wrong? I ask why the position is open aka promotion with in. I ask what is the typical career track for the position.
Posted on 1/13/15 at 2:19 pm to LSUfan4444
We can offer Smart a chance at something that no one else currently can. He would have the opportunity to not only set him self apart from Saban as a defensive mind, but would also have the chance to still go head to head with him every year. There are only 7 other schools that offer that, and none of them have impending DC openings.
The current talent level and recruiting advantages don't hurt the offer, either.
