I Tunes folder in new computer question

I am being forced, against my will, to upgrade my ancient Dell Dimension running windows XP to an Optiplex 9020 with Windows 8. I have an external USB hard drive with my Itunes folder on it that has somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 gigs of music on it. Can I just install Itunes on the new computer and change the folder directory to the one on the USB drive? I really hope it is that simple. TIA.

yes. You should be able to just drag the iTunes Music Library.xml file from your external hard drive and drop it into iTunes.

You can also press Shift while launching iTunes, and it will give you the chance to choose a different library or create a new one.

Good. Thanks, y'all.

OK... got my Itunes folder sort of synced up. But I must have done something wrong... now I have two copies of everything, but one of them shows as "missing". So my Library SAYS it has like 65,000 songs and is 700 gigs, when it is really only half that. Is there an easy way to eliminate all of the missing songs, or would it be better to delete the Itunes library file and just tell it to find songs again?
