Urban Meyer Explains Why An 8-Team College-Football Playoff Won't Work

"You can't do that," Meyer told Patrick. "You better give us 110 scholarships then ... when [it moved to] 85 scholarships there were 12 games. Now there's 15 and the last three they added aren't against smaller [schools]. They're heavyweight prizefights. You just can't do it."

In other words, Meyer's biggest concern is the health of the players and asking them to do too much over the course of a lengthened season. If the schools had more scholarships and bigger rosters, those same players could then get more rest during the season. But that is not happening with just 85 scholarships available to each team.
I think that's dumb as shite. 85 scholarships is a huge roster.

I bet if Ohio State had actually been left out the playoff, he would have begged to have an 8 game playoff. I fricking hate Urban Meyer. The biggest hypocrite in all of sports.

Let's ask TCU's coach if a 8 team playoff will work.

i do agree that it might be asking too much of the young players. these are kids trying to prove themselves to go to the next level. pushing them too hard too early could be disastrous.

So basically out of conference games against shitty opponents would turn into JV games in order to rest the starters...

Only way I want a 8 team play off is if the first round is a home game for the top 4 teams.

Plus walk-ons.
And how many of those 85, plus walk-ons, never see any action?

We play them OOC in a few years, so no.

I think his argument is dumb. Ohio High School potentially play 15 games a year with much smaller rosters. Than 85 in the lower divisions. If anything a smaller scholly limit would HELP OSU and other big schools that can stock pile recruits.

85 people is a ton. You can have a 3 deep roster of offense and defense with 19 left over to play special teams. Don't know why he is using this as a valid argument.

Texas plays 16 games in 17 weeks with far fewer than 85 players on most teams.

And with long bus rides to games too.

How is it that FCS can have a 24-game playoff but FBS can't handle 8?

Until he's sitting at 5-8 when the regular season ends. Then he'll change his tune.

He is an idiot

The fans deserve a true champion

This year will be close but we are still left wandering about TCU and what they might have done

8 teams is the only way to truly say it was settled on the field.
