Progressions from growing hair from one style to another (Men's) short to medium

Couple months back I was in an accident and the windshield scalped about a 3-4 inch patch of head/skin/hair.
Unfortunately at that point I had to shave the rest of my head down to the scalp (no guard) to let it all grow back evenly (what parts that will grow back where there isn't any glass remaining stuck under the skin/scars)
I've got some questions.
I know a lot of people wear their hair at a shorter medium length like me, that also like to shave their head every spring/summer and grow in back in the fall. Well i'm curious on the best way to get it back without having to go too long at any period looking like either Acre boy, Jimmy Nall, nor JeauxBleaux.
it's been 2 months since the "buzz" cut and just went and received my first haircut since. Didn't even go to my regular barber Mr. Ernie, I went to the little strip mall quick cuts since I didn't figure she could mess it up. She didn't give me any pointers either. She just cleaned up the sides, "faded" the sides into the top with clippers and edged it all out. Told her to not touch the top, as in I would like it to grow out.
It still doesn't look good right now and I think that is a product of me trying to let it "grow out"...
What's some things I can do during this transitional period? certain way to get it cut that still allows it to grow out?
My end result is just a normal scissored taper side parted business like hairstyle. Pretty basic, but classic look.
Thanks for anyone that actually read this shite. Hope you weren't expecting some sorta ol' school SS thread bc I'm boring these days :/
Really thinking about getting me a new hat :| ,,, or a Tino bandanna
eta: every single time I see the word scissor I think of lesbians now...
eta2:
Source pic of sorta how i'm trying to grow it, this would be on the shorter end, say right after a normal haircut, so about a month/6 weeks longer than this
From bald....... Now go!! ... give me the progressions on how I should get it their the easiest way

I buzzed my hair for a couple years and just recently grew it out. It takes a lot longer than you think it will, but the key is to keep trimming the sides and back every couple weeks. Right now I have 8/4/2 guards on the sides and about 3 inches on top. It's easy to do yourself. I mostly just do the side part you mentioned. I like how it is now, but I'm gonna keep growing it and maintaining it for the time being.

It takes a lot longer than you think it will,
I've buzzed it before, but back when I wasn't worried and I could just straight bum it for 6-8 months
I'm trying to get back in the swing of things, not wanting to take any time off if ya know what i mean

I've trimmed the top/bangs once (took about an inch off, just to clean it up) since I started growing it out around July 4th. I THINK the top is around 3 inches now, but I could be really bad at estimating. Seems like hair grows faster when it's longer in the first place, but I'm sure that's not actually true.

I think I understand what you are trying to say...I would just go for the contour with a 1 on the sides and a hard part. It has a lot of the business/classic look but it can look sharp on most guys with minimal effort.

It kills me to not have hair
It really is amazing how miserable my life has become ever since going bald. I use to do pretty well for myself back when I have hair
And now I have nothing
