Why do colleges have advising flags?

Just got done sitting in the advisor's waiting room by myself for an hour and a half for the woman to spend two minutes lifting my advising flags. This shite happens every time, and she doesn't do appointments. She won't even lift them over the phone, I must be "advised" in person.
If you can't figure out a flowchart, should you really be in college? Do students not know that they have a low GPA or failed their last class? What is the point of advising flags other than to be a pain in the arse every semester by not allowing me to schedule? I mean, if I actually need help, yeah I'd go, but why force me to waste my time?

Tech used to do that when I was there (they may still do it). Drove me crazy.

I forgot all about setting mine up before the end of last semester. Fortunately, I don't have to deal with Nelly anymore.

You complain a lot. Did you post in the blood pressure thread? Yours has got to be through the roof.

That's where I was while she "was doing something else" for an hour and a half
I can see the point in having an advisor in case you need one, but what's the point of flagging everyone so they can't schedule?

Advising flags for everybody? Is that (relatively) new?
Back in My Day (and Get off My Lawn!), the only people that had to get advised were the freshman/people that hadn't been accepted into their main college and the people on academic probation.

I would probably be almost graduated with 5000 more dollars to my name if I never went to advising. Those people have no fricking clue what they are talking about. Don't blindly follow what they say.

Had them at LSU before I was accepted into a college, and in RNR. RNR was small enough that I could just walk by and tell them to lift my flags without saying anything else. This is just bullshite
They put the flowchart online. How hard is it to follow some arrows to the next box?

I've never heard of them, what are they?
In undergrad, I always just walked in with a handful of classes I wanted and my advisor said, yes, that'll work, the end. Maybe made a couple of suggestions, but that was it.

Essentially force you to see an advisor before you schedule every semester. You cannot schedule until you get the flags lifted

I don't see how this is hard to figure out

My daughter had to meet with her advisor in October and schedule in November for this semester. If you did not meet with the advisor you could not access the scheduling system.

I would go in, tell him what classes I planned to take, and he would say ok and sign. I could have told him I was taking all art classes and he probably would just nod and say ok and sign anyways. Pointless.

that's what happened to me
the adviser was kind of a bitch to me, so i went into total "i'm a fricking a-hole" mode and was super condescending about her job

The ones at LSU were some of the dumbest people I've ever met. One person would tell you something, and you could walk to the next office and they'd tell you something different

"in the snow both ways up hill"...
Let me take you back in time when you had to wait in an actual line to register for classes...don't remember if we had flags back then but if we did they must have raised them at one of the first or second table...

mine looked up my transcript and was like "oh you don't look like somebody about to graduate with honors"
i was like
then i basically just went into the whole "why do we do this? if kids are in college, they should be able to do this on their own. i'm really insulted that i came here now, knowing that my degree is tainted. don't you think it's funny that your job is to make LSU look worse, by helping idiots graduate?" stuff
