I miss me some pop-up videos!

VH1 turned 30 on January 1. The channel's original purpose was to play music videos, and throughout its history, it created several programs that brought music videos to its audience in new and exciting formats. One popular show in the '90s was Pop Up Video, a show that annotated music videos on television.

Pop Up Video, one could argue, was the original live-tweeting, and maybe even the original explainer journalism. With a popping sound, a little thought bubble appeared on the screen — only big enough to hold maybe 120 characters — and gave viewers background on the videos they were watching. Pop Up Video ran on VH1 from 1996 to 2002, then returned for a single year in 2011.

Yes, I remember when all they did was play videos on VH1. Back in the 80's it was the adult contemporary version of MTV. Lots of Phil Collins, Lionel Richie, Billy Joel, Tina Turner and Elton John music. Rosie O'Donnell was one of their hosts. Pop-up video came later and was fine. That was before the dark times ... before reality TV.

I miss Behind the Music. I mean, I know they'll show it for rappers sometimes but that was a great show.

It still comes on the VH1 channel that just plays videos

Everything I know about 80's music I learned through VH1, when they would play 80's videos all day on Saturdays in the 90's.

Yeah I hated that shite. I remember VH1 was the lesser cool soft rock version of MTV when I was a kid. Then they went through a period where they were actually the station that played videos and MTV was all mostly crap shows but then they both started sucking and still continue to do so to this day.
At least that's the way I recall things.

I enjoyed "Pop-Up Video," but it seemed after a while that they played the same reruns over & over. I haven't watched vh1 in forever, but I remember it constantly showing countdown shows & "I Love the (insert decade)" reruns. Didn't they do "Flavor of Love" & all the other clones & spinoffs of that show?

And I used to like those "most shocking moments in rock" shows they showed every now in then. I feel like the "I love the...(80's, 90's, etc)" was the beginning of the end for the videos on that channel. That and the "Rock of Love" "Flavor of Love" type shows.
Oh and I used to dig it when a musician would "take over" the channel for a day.

I always enjoyed Behind the Music and their Rock Docs. They did a few episodes of Pop Up Jersey Shore and a few other shows I think that were cool too. Now it's just BET Lite.

I remember my parents wouldn't let me watch Mtv so I was so thankful when VH1 came along (which was just frowned upon). Happy b-day VH1!

Yeah, the only episodes I've seen them show recently has been like Mary J Blige or Ja Rule.
