Truck has a stumble/miss that isn't enough to throw a code, so I am trying to get inside the engine electronically to see if I can figure it out. I already have a programmer that can read and clear codes, but I was looking at something that can do live scanning and recording since it wont turn on the CEL.

Definitely not springing for a Tech 2 or one of those tablet scanners, but was thinking about getting a cheaper one. Didn't know if you guys have used one before or not.

These are the two I was thinking about. Can't really tell the difference between the two.

Autel AL519
Innova 31003

If any of you OB mechanics already have a good scanner around SELA (mj2), you wanna solve a riddle for me?

Most of the OReillys, Napa, Autozone kinds of store will have them behind the counter. Some of them have even let me use it myself in the parking lot. It may save you a few bucks.

Yes, those are free to use, but just read codes. I need live monitoring because it isn't throwing a code. I also don't know what specific parameters to look for once I get the scanner

A scangauge can monitor anything that reports to the OBD port. See what parameters are available on your truck.

Was thinking about getting one. They are on sale at Autozone for $135 right now, but am not sure if it can give me all of the info as a legit scanner

Eta: Supposedly they all miss a little bit and I am not okay with that. Something to do with balancing the crank

Unfortunately the only ones that can give you everything you want are usually proprietary.

Blue Point makes an OBD2 scanner that will do most generic functions and give you a lot of basic info, but they run about 400.

What info are you looking for, specifically?

ETA: And what all have you done to think you need a scan tool? You might be able to diagnose that without one.

Could be an intermittent issue with a crank or cam sensor. Could be a issue with a coil pack or plug wires. If you can recreate the miss easily, you may be able to get it to miss enough that it will actually throw a code.

It is intermittent, but consistent if that makes sense. I have done everything that I can think of to alleviate it, but nothing so far has worked. Put it this way, I've done everything that a full 100k tune-up would do and then some. It is enough to where it would take me 10 minutes to think of it all, and I'd still forget some.

A clue

I am figuring that a live scanner will be able to show me something so I'm not just randomly take things apart or throwing money around. Possibly a bad injector or coil pack that aren't bad or consistent enough to get a code

Only thing that I know for sure is wrong with it is two snapped off exhaust manifold studs and a broken fin inside the muffler. One on the front passenger side and the other on the driver rear. Copper gasket maker around the ports and they are "somewhat" sealed off. Did it before the exhaust manifold swap, and has gradually gotten worse. New o2 sensors and cats are both good

Problem feels internal

You need a scan tool not a scanner. I use Snap on Modis. Has cylinder balance test that will show you which cylinder is missing. Only a $7000 tool.

You gonna be making maps all week?

Matco makes some good scanners for around 300-400$. Live data. Fix assist. Code reader with definitions and such. Is this truck a gas burner or diesal. Not familiar with chevy engines. If it's a gas burner sounds like its probaly a coil pack. Start unplugging coils while the truck is running. If motor starts to miss when you unplug one then it is good. If not it is not working. I would try that first

I would've done that, but like I said earlier....it is intermittently consistent. I'm not sure if that would work

I think they're prone to cam sensor issues.

They can also be prone to piston rock because the skirts are so short.

Mine runs a little shitty when it's cold.

Wouldn't the cam sensor set the CEL off? Same with the crank sensor? Yeah, pistons slap when it is cold, but it goes away once it gets warmer than say 170 degrees. This is all of the time, and is more of a hard miss when I'm running 80-85mph. Not as frequently. Still no codes though

I don't know if it would or not.

I'm sure you'll need something like mojo was talking about to hunt it down without throwing parts at it.

I have an Innova and something like one of these that I picked up on Amazon for $26.

That plus a free app can turn a smartphone or tablet into a decent code reader. Nice thing about the bluetooth is you can mess with something under the hood and see if it affects the gauge readouts. Made it easy to trouble shoot a faulty air temp sensor connection since I could pinch the wires at the connector and see if temperature changed.
