Not only were this year’s domestic admissions of 1.259 billion off 6% from 2013’s 1.34B, but the number of tickets sold hit their lowest level since 1995 when 1.211B people went to the cinema.

Insiders attribute the down year to lackluster product and the lack of even bigger tentpoles versus ticket prices, which remained level.

Deadline story.

This year's summer schedule is obviously stacked, so 2015 should turn things around.

Theaters will go the way of the Blockbusters and Movie Galleries of the world. Some will stay open for indie and special releases, but eventually everything will be online. Scary thought.

They may shrink in number but won't ever totally go away. The experience of the big screen can't be replicated by mass majority and there are plenty who wouldnt be able to stream or buy and would prefer to go to the theater. I have a big tv and all that but love the theater myself.

Most of the movies this year sucked.

DOFP
Interstellar...
Edit: GOG almost forgot thanks Tywin

Not many really great films these were pretty much the only ones I saw that I enjoyed thoroughly.

Can you imagine how bad it would have been without Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy?

Not surprising at all due to ticket/concession costs, movie selections, and streaming options becoming available.

We go to the movies a fair amount, but probably went from 2x/month in 2013 to 5 times in 2014.

I bet I bought more movie tickets in 2014 than I did in any other year of my life.

I've been to the theater a lot this year. Also, I can't imagine not seeing movies like Guardians, Interstellar, etc. in the theater. The experience was so positive/enjoyable.

I don't see movie theaters going the way of Blockbuster in our lifetime.

Apples and Oranges.

Netflix directly replaced Blockbuster's option of renting movies for home viewing.

There is no replacement for the movie theater experience. The only way that they would disappear is if releasing to theaters became severely less profitable for the studios and distributors.

Next year is going to do silly insane numbers (Star Wars, Avengers, Batman/Superman, Bond)
