There have been a couple of bad years sprinkled in (Tepper, Malveto) but for the most part LSU always fields a solid defense no matter the coordinator. The Louisiana recruiting base consistently produces top D- Linemen and DB's. I think any solid coordinator who can get the top LA recruits to stay home will consistently field a solid D.

Personally I think Chavis was just ok from a scheme perspective. He made better in game adjustments than the other side of the ball. I certainly don't think he is the best LSU can do.

"Always" is a funny term. It sort of depends on how old you are or how good your memory is.

If you are 47, like me, the sentence "LSU has always had a good defense" is known as..........FALSE

Last years defense would be more in line with your op than the really great defenses we had in the last 15 years...and tiger fans think it sucked.

We generally has some pretty good offenses over the years also.

I would say traditionally our offense was usually in the top half of CFB while the defense would traditionally rank in the top 20.

Over the last 10 years out offense would rank closer to the bottom third than the top 50...yet some of our fans feel it's a good thing that we need a new DC.

Hell maybe y'all are right and a new DC may make our defense even better...we know the offense will never carry this team with the coaches we have.

I've been following for about 25 years which I feel is long enough to establish the norm for solid defense. LSU has produced some great D talent in the past 25 years and has had many defenses finish top 20, several top 10 and a few top 5. All under several different coordinators. The common denominator is LSU and its recruiting base.

Carl Reese, Will Muschamp, Bo Pellini and John Chavis were all able to field good to great defense while at LSU. Was LSU just that lucky with coordinators or does the talent play a larger part?
