Why does this Pendergast guy not already have a job if he is so great?

He can't be that bad if he's got like 10 years of NFL experience tbh
I know nothing about him other than that but I mean, those AZ cardinals defenses were pretty good when he was there

He is still collecting $$$ from USC. Take a year off from the grind and spend it with the family? Also he is still very active with numerous teams. Just nothing contract official.

He is a former Super Bowl DC and supposedly a very good recruiter. LSU's distinctive identity is developing its players for the NFL. If he can recruit LB's and pass rushers, he will be an upgrade.
You could be right and he's not as good as advertised but he could be so confident in his own abilities he waited for the right opportunity. Miles is betting on the latter with his job.

The question in my mind is his recruiting. It is pretty clear that he did well with existing talent at Cal (Cameron Jordan, Chris Conti), and USC (Leonard Williams). So he can coach, no doubt.
But can he recruit? His Cal classes weren't that great. Very few early entries to the NFL. He had some headliner successes at USC (Cravens, Jackson), but it is easy to recruit at USC.

He turned TAMU down. I doubt he comes here so I wouldn't get too excited. Would be kinda funny if TAMU took Chavis and then we go right behind them to get their first pick.
