Chavis is a huge loss from a recruiting and game planning perspective but we haven't been very aggressive in the last 3 yrs. The scheme depends on corners shutting down receivers as opposed to an effective pass rush. More in the bend but don't break mould rather than making QBs run for their lives. Pelini and Saban both focused on d line pressure which led to QB errors. You'd get toasted occasionally but that beats letting opposing offenses settle down and pick us apart. This also partially explains the 2 min drill issues and the 3rd down conversions.

Whoever we get, I hope we get back to being more aggressive upfront. We have the athletes and talent for it.

The past two years have been some of the worst D line play I've ever seen. Absolutely no pressure on the quarterback.

19 sacks won't get it done for any DC.

I still remember guys like Williams, Wroten, Spears, Dorsey and others hunting in pairs and bearing down on opposing quarterbacks who were running for their lives. They also plugged up the middle very well. We just lost that look with Chavis. I'd love to see that again.

I agree with all the comments about d line pressure and how about adding some zone defense on 3rd and long and keep the ball in front of you. There is a place for zone and cover 2. Doesn't have to be man to man all the time.

Even before the game began I wondered how much a distraction it would be for the defense. Chavis obviously didn't have his heart in it.
