Did Baltimore cost JJ Watt the MVP?

I've been listening to the debate on sports radio and I've read most of threads on the MSB, and the biggest argument against Watt seems to be the fact that the Texans missed the playoffs. My question is two fold - if the Texans make the playoffs, does Watt win the MVP, and if so, should a Baltimore win or loss really be the determining factor?
Asked another way, if you believe Watt is the MVP if the Texans make the playoffs, but you wouldn't give it to him otherwise, why should a game out of his control decide the award?
For the record, I think Rodgers deserves it and will win, I just don't understand some of the arguments against Watt.

Watt had an incredible season last year and they went 2-14. He's a stud but not the MVP of the league.

No he didn't. He had 10.5 sacks and 2 fumble recoveries. He had an incredible year 2 years ago and they went 12-4...this year's production was the same as 2012, but with way more playmaking and disruption.
ETA - Aaron Rodgers deserves the MVP, but so does JJ Watt. You can't go wrong with either one. That said, if JJ doesn't win it this year, I don't know if a defensive player will ever win it again. All the QBs in the NFL would have to go full retard for that to happen.

Id say losing 7 games cost them the playoffs, not the Baltimore win...

he should still win IMO
without him they probably drop 10 or 11 games especially considering the revolving door of walking horse hockey they trotted out at the QB position all year

Why did a game out of his control decide whether he made the playoffs? Doesn't sound too valuable.

Watt is the best player in football. No doubt about it. Is the MVP the best player or the best player on a great team?
Thats the million dollar question.

I think A-Aron is the MVP because without him, the Packers are complete garbage. Watt is probably the most amazing athlete in the NFL right now, but I'm not sure he's the MVP. He's worthy, just not this year I don't think.

It's neither. It's most valuable, not best.

There's more to Dline production than sacks and fumble recoveries. He was the highest ranked player on PFF, at any position, by a large margin. I call that having an incredible season. You can call it something else if you like.

Watt obviously grades out the highest on PFF, but I thought it was "easier" to score points as a defensive. Just not a fan of metrics that are points based off a system. I just prefer the raw numbers, a formula that outputs the level of production, or a scaled version of those numbers.

I'm not using it to say he's the best player in the NFL, just that he had an incredible season.

Alright, I'll agree with that. Though, from what I understand, grading him as a 3-4 DE is difficult because he doesn't really have the typical assignments of a 3-4 DE. He pretty much has free reign to do whatever he wants. He would still have off the chart grades either way.
