Why did "The Killing" not succeed?

I am currently wrapping up the final season and I think its a great show.
I know some were turned off by season 1 not wrapping up the initial story....I actually steamrolled through season 1 right before season 2 started so it just seemed like one long season to me.
I watch and wonder how AMC cancelled it but aired shite like Small Town Security.

By which measure did it not succeed? It ended up with 4 seasons.
I think Seasons 3 and 4 were better than 1 and 2.
My one complaint was the writing in places was a bit hackneyed and weak.

People got really turned off by the initial case dragging into multiple seasons without resolution. Otherwise it was a solid show and AMC canceling it was disappointing since it really hit it's stride in it's last season on AMC.

I don't realky remember it that well. Watched every episode of the first season. Was pissed that I wasted all that time with no closure at the end of the season. Screw them, not watching anymore of it.

season 1 was very slow and left people with a huge "frick you" ending. many were shocked it got a 2nd season after that

Admittedly, I watched it binge-wise after Season 2 was already finished...but why were folks SO incensed that it took more than 1 Season for the first case? Who cares? Why would that be relevant?

Because I spent a few months watching it when it came on tv. One episode a week, waiting for the payoff. Then, when you think you're about to get there, it ends. They want you to wait months for the conclusion. No thanks.

I thought it was okay. Just a little bland. I only watched the first season and I liked it. But it was just slow and gloomy with everyone having a shitty life and it always raining. I realize they did the rain thing for a reason and it's based in Seattle or whatever but it just made the episodes drag on. Like after one episode i would stop because it felt like a 2 hour episode

Same for me. Although with more dynamic leads I think it has a better chance for widespread appeal. It was a solid concept, IMO.
Honestly, Breaking Bad had some of the same challenges. But it had meth and sunshine going for it.

If I remember correctly, I believe it was marketed that way leading up to season 1. At least that is what the ads led you to believe.

IMO, The Killing was an average show. Average acting, very average writing. I thought the 4th season was pretty terrible. I admit, I watched that right after I finished Twin Peaks and could not help but compare the two which is probably a little unfair. I thought Sarah Linden was a pretty bad character to hang a show on. Zero redeeming qualities. Her terrible parenting became a joke to me in the third and fourth season. If you liked The Killing, checkout Broadchurch (second season coming soon). Its a much better show IMO. Top of the Lake is another one of those whodunit shows but involves a rape rather than a killing and it is pretty good.
