Working perfectly, look almost new and the paper warranty card from Altermen audio when they were on Freret St. still on the back of the speaker. Just how much better are speakers today ?

My dad just paid $1200 for some 1980ish pioneer speakers off audiogon and they kick arse.

WOW, Mine sound great, it's just hard to believe my 38 year old speakers will sound as good as speakers of today. Thanks, something to think about.

Here is your answer. Mind you, nothing wrong with auditioning some new gear.

Good speaker design and sound IS exactly that...look at what a speaker is made of...not much has changed.

With an 8ohm nominal and 6ohm lower impedance, they should be easy to drive. The woofer is a 10" air suspended, which means there is no port hole. This type of speaker tended to give a tighter bass response while sacrificing a lower frequency response. The negative pressure in a sealed cabinet as the woofer extends out acts as a "spring" or "vacuum" to help pull the woofer back in as music plays.
The only thing to look out for is the rubber or butyl surround that attaches the paper cone to the frame. After 40 years, they may become dry rot. If that is the case, there are many places that will re-seal the woofers--probably at $50-75 each.
Keep 'em and enjoy the sound they produce.

Altermen audio
Wow memories of shopping. I've always enjoyed talking to Henry Alterman. I haven't been back to New Orleans for some 10 years now. Is Alterman Audio still around?

Alterman closed down, however, Henry is working at the Magnolia Audio section of Best Buy on Veterans near I-10 selling the high dollar gear.
I spoke with him on Christmas Eve--he is a wealth of knowledge and knows his shite when it comes to audio.
