My only experiences with cops are:
-2 speeding tickets, both times the cops were matter of fact, I knew I got caught, was polite and on my way in 5 minutes
- in crowd control situations, mardi gras, bourbon street etc, cops are generally in good spirits, will joke with you, let the drunk girls i am with pet their horses, etc

Of course I benefit from white privilege and have no idea the horrible suffering innocent black males go through at the hands of police on a daily basis...

But lets say 10% of cops are pieces of shite. Id say at least 10% of doctors or lawyers are pieces of shite. Why pick on cops more?

Uh, because they hold the power of life or death, freedom or incarceration over you? There is no place for bullies and thugs in this career. Cops need to do a better job of policing their own; the days when the blue code of silence was a way of life are long gone.

No. Cops just have more authority over the public.

I have worked out with various cops in the gym for 30 years. They are nice people. They all agreed with me that seat belt laws are illogical but they can't say that when giving a ticket. The seat belt stop is usually an excuse to search the car for other violations.

My parents taught me in the 1950s 'If a policeman tells you to do something, do it. He will shoot you." That advice served me well. When stopped for a speeding or running a stop sign I'm always polite. I say 'yes sir'. 90% of the time I didn't get a ticket.

As for other professions... I really hate personal injury lawyers. What a bunch of assholes. I hate the clerks behind the counter at the DMV. They are the ultimate experts at avoiding work.

It has been proven that as a profession law enforcement as a whole has improved a lot in the past 30 years.

We still have a ways to go though. To many departments still don't have high enough standards.

100% agree. Way back when, the main requirement was brawn. Most try to get college educated folks and overall the overwhelming majority are good folks. Because it is high profile and so public, the bad is focused on with a microscope and today's public tends to generalize more than ever before.

Oooh, that jogged an old brain cell. There is a town in La. named Boyce. I was driving through there in 1980 at midnight coming back from a trip to New Orleans. My alternator belt broke and the battery went dead.

I walked a few blocks to the tiny Boyce Police Station and the elderly black chief of police said "Oh, sure. We can call Bob and he'll fix you up. It will take a few hours."

I sat down to wait. Then the door burst open and this very large white cop came in with black perp accused of burglary.

Black chief: What did he do this time?
White cop: Stole a bunch of stuff from Mr. Jone's garage again.
Perp: F You you bunch of F'n F'ers!!!

The cop then put the perp in a headlock and rammed his skull into the cinder block wall. There was blood. The perp calmed down immediately.

Black chief: "Don't kill him. Just put him in the cell to cool off."

Chief then turned to me: "Sorry you had to see that, Mr. Zach."

Me: No problem, sir.

Other professions cannot abuse you, shoot you or take your freedom.

Other professions do not protect those that break the law in their profession.

Most politicians are lawyers also. Two wrongs certainly don't make a right in this case.

You have completely lost your mind. You are one of those people who think if they say it enough it becomes true.

I know what the standards of today are and what they were 30 years ago when I started. We had guys that couldn't read or write back then and now we have college educated officers all over the place. I would say that that is a huge improvement. I also see guys that have other alternatives taking jobs as officers instead of other jobs. Back 30 years ago a lot of officers only took the job because they couldn't get drive a truck and didn't want to do manual labor.

We still have a long way to go in this profession and we will always have departments that don't pay as well and aren't as picky as the better ones.

It's been my experience dealing with cops that if you act like a butt, they will respond in kind. And if you are polite, they tend to be reasonably.

The college educated cops I know are only in that profession because the economy sucks and they took whatever job they could get.

I hate these Michael Brown-type situations because I have to defend the police because they are clearly right. It takes away from the real problems with police officers.
