Long WaPo piece from Balko on the unique structural issues of STL county municipalities.
It's a pretty telling summation of a number of issues that have little do with race and much more to do with overcriminalization and city revenue generation.

Racism is alleged here for admitted repeat offenders with outstanding warrants. Whatever.
If I were stopped with a single outstanding warrant, I should expect to be taken to jail. If you don't want to go to jail as a result of a routine traffic stop, don't have an outstanding warrant. Is that simple?

The article didn't seem to focus as much on race or allege racism to be the primary issue as I noted in the OP. It is interesting that's what you took from it.

Well some of those violations is for the common good. Try "asking" a Motherfricker to pull his pants up. They flip out of you. So frickem, go to jail asshat.

When most of your population in those areas don't work and pay taxes, they have to generate revenue somehow.

That's part of it. But part of it, you are supporting mayors, judges, attorneys and a police force for a town of 800 or 1200 people. That money has to come from fines and fees.

Bolden doesn't have money to pay tickets, but she has money to get tattoos. Hey, be late for class; don't speed. I don't like what the police have become, but she makes sooo many stupid points. She's worried about her fatherless babies, but she isn't concerned about driving recklessly.

Yes, it's "simple" if you are determined to unthinkingly maintain the status quo. If you'll read the article, you'll notice that the warrants are not for things nearly as bad as a warrant would imply.

When you hear me talk about departments don't have the same standards as the ones that you never hear anything about this is what I am talking about. If you have to depend on traffic tickets to keep your city afloat you probably shouldn't have a city or a police department.
I do write insurance tickets though, because I have seen how much it cost to hard working people that get hit by a uninsured motorist. If you can afford cigs, beer and tats you should have insurance.

I don't have one problem with that. Some bleeding heart may call that a "poverty crime," but when they run into another person's car and that person is stuck with the bill, they may have difficulty paying for it, too.
We have probably 20 townships (at least) in the STL county that would cease to exist without ticket revenue. And a lot of them are Minority dominated in the city government. Which kinda removes the racial component of the argument.

If the government is the problem, you don't want the citizens to fix it. That would get ugly. So, the alternative is to have government fix government. That's not hypocritical.
