Looking for an entry level rifle to take to the range and learn how to shoot. And don't want to break the bank

Great out of the box rifle and a good choice of caliber for any medium to large North American game.

So technically I could take this bad boy hunting?
And is the scope decent?

I have one that I use for deer hunting 4 or 5 times a year. I've only been deer hunting for 3 years so I was in your shoes at one time.
I find for the price it is a good gun. At the range my first 4-5 shots are tightly grouped. After that the barrel heats up and the shots start to float. I would say it is a great entry level gun.

Scope is about as entry level as you can get. That being said it will serve every purpose you need out to 200 yards.
For $11 you can order a single piece scope mount raile from B&H photo online. Get that an some thread locker and mount it in place. This allows you a wider range of movement with the scope and a more stable base. Just make sure you stay within the scopes eye relief range if moving the scope forward or backward on the rail. Then make sure the scope is locked down well prior to trying to sight in.
Add a sling, and a neoprene scope cover, and some ear plugs and you have all you need.

Several hundred thousand folks will kill deer with a very similar rifle this year. I would upgrade the glass but other than that its all your average hunter will ever need.

After the $50 rebate and xfer fee it'll come out to around $250. Can't pass the deal up if I can eventually use this bad boy to hunt

It's a good entry level firearm for hunting. You'll be fine with it and if something happens and you don't use it often, you're not out much.

One of my boys has this rifle with a Bushnell scope and it is very accurate. It is into its second year of hunting and no issues whatsoever. It has a fine trigger as well.

quote:1+. If someone wants to spend $800 for a gun and $700 for a scope that's fine.....BUT one can get started hunting for a lot less, as well.

The first time I used the link I could see the gun was an Axis. Thereafter, the link just takes me to ads so I don't know what kind of scope it is. When my son first started hunting I bought him a Savage bolt action rifle in 308 and 3-9X scope package. He used the package for 5-6 yrs w/ good success before I decided to get a scope that would last his lifetime. You should be fine w/ your scope/gun package. Upgrade the scope later on if you want to.
