I'm referring to the commercial in which a young girl records a song for grandmother onto her phone and presents it to her along with black-and-white pictures of the grandmother and her soldier husband when they younger

Exactly what is accomplished by making grown men cry? I know marketers and advertisers always have some hidden meaning to what they present to us. What do you think they hoped to achieve with this commercial?

Obviously they want to tug on your heart strings for the holidays but beyond that, what else can we take from the commercial?

Would be cheaper to do the same thing on Android.

They probably hoped to achieve the feat of selling a lot of apple shite.

The bottom line in all, all commercials is Paired Associate Learning. i.e. Red means Stop and Green means Go, ect...

So they generate a mood within you, the most powerful of these moods, are the moods they generate without your awareness, sometimes referred to as Subliminal processes, then pairing that Produced Mood with their product.

The creativity is in how they do all that

This is the type of post I was looking for.

The only commercial that's similar to this that I can think of is the Anheuser Busch commercial with the Clydesdale and the puppy the was released during Super Bowl but even that one doesn't seem as direct as the Apple commercial?

Just thought it was a very interesting approach and figured there would be some advertising/marketing people around here that could provide insight

Ok, if you do this it is more fun than the programs.

As soon as the commercial starts move your eyes to the objects in the background and become aware of the music, those would be the edges of the Subliminal

Haven't noticed the ad, but it sounds like a Kodak Moment ad or one of those old AT&T/Bell land line phone ads that showed people calling home to talk with family. When I still had a heart, they used to make me tear up.

Apple has been getting blasted lately for having shitty advertising. Seriously those jimmy Fallon and justin timberlake commercials are horrific. An appeal to retardation and bragging that they finally have phones with decently sized screens, while every other major brand has for years.

Oh yeah and they have a commercial with a little girl as the lead singer of a cover band singing a song about a giant black penis.

They probably finally figured out they need to go back to their roots again, although this commercial is a fail too. People want to watch TV shows, not a 2 minute short story every commercial break.

Here are the 2013 and 2014 Clydesdale commercial. 2013 was longer and better IMO

Also, re: AT&T are you thinking of the commercial they aired during Desert Storm with the phoning a solider or something like that

From the 70's & 80's. There were several different ones. The ad campaign was called, "Reach out and touch someone."

My favorite:

Joey called!

Others:

Big brother moved out

Nervous high school kid calling girl

Made friends on vacation

Son calls home from college

First, the 70's and 80's are very underrated time periods .

Those commercials were all cool. They were heartwarming without being cheesy or depressing. I like the teen asking for a date the best. You rarely go wrong with a smart mouth kid in the mix.
