Help setting up new iPhone from backup

The wife toilet dunked her old iPhone and just received the replacement.
I want to setup the new phone using her iCloud backup but the problem is that her new phone is running iOS 7 while her iCloud backup is from iOS 8.
Can I upgrade the new phone to 8 and then apply her backup w/o messing anything up?

Set up as new phone, update it.
Then reset it and restore from cloud.

Thanks! Thought I could do that but wanted to make sure.
If I screwed up my phone, it wouldn't matter as much to me.
I would be in big trouble if I had lost the wife's data though.

You can access iCloud on new phone once setup and configuration on newest IOS platform is complete. Why didn't you get her a bulletproof case for the now destroyed iphone. The case is water proof.
