NFL teams that consistently promise to improve, then stay terrible, are manipulating you. Strike back! It's OK to be a fair-weather fan.

I can remember about 3 teams from my youth that I was pretty big fans of at the time. I liked Green Bay the best and I still like them. The other two were the Titans when they first started out, and the Falcons in the Chris Chandler/Jamal Anderson era.

What's the point of rooting for a team if you are a bandwagon fan though? Just to annoy everyone you know with shite talking?

Bandwagon fans are okay in pro sports.
College is different. If you didn't go to the school, it's not really a legit fan interest.

this is really the only part that makes sense. if your team is playing for a draft pick in week 17, you dont have to watch. hell, you probably shouldnt. watch other games that are meaningful.

I think some people have a stronger attachment to the game itself or certain players.
For example, I'm a huge baasketball fan, but more so of the game than the Pelicans. I will always root for the Pels but also root for teams and players which are fun to watch.
I root for alot of teams in NFL, because I'm not as big a Saints fan as I am LSU. I'm a casual Saints fan, but I love football. So I root for teams like Arizona, Denver, Giants, Bengals etc. also due to players I like on certain teams.
If you don't have a strong connection with a certain city or organization, but love sports, I can see how it is very easy to be a bandwagon fan and have no problem with it.

I don't agree with this. I was raised in Louisiana but moved to Ohio when I was in HS, and went to college at University of Cincinnati.
I've been a diehard LSU fan since I was young. Am I supposed to stop being a fan because I didn't go there? Was I supposed to move 13 hours from all my family and pay more money for OOS tuition because I'm an LSU fan?
ETA: Not to mention countless other situations. Kids who have rooted for schools across the country since they were born, due to their parents being fans/alumni; choosing a different school due to it being a better fit for your academic career even though you were already a fan of another.
I mean if you chose to go to ULL but could've gone to LSU also, and chose it for no particular reason other than you liked it better then yeah I sort of think it's weird to be an LSU fan. Or if you're a fan of multiple schools for diffferent sports- I don't get that.

I always grew up a Saints fan, even though we were hardly any good for a big stretch. Of course I would watch other teams, but I still wanted the Saints to win.
I was already in college when New Orleans got the Pelicans, so it's not like I grew up a Pelicans fan. Do I still watch them and root for them? Of course. But what if I was a Bulls fan my entire life before then even though I didn't live in Chicago? Would switching my allegiance to the Pelicans be "unfanlike"?
Personally, I really don't care who someone cheers for. The world is so different these days. Your favorite player can play for 5 different teams within their careers, we have access to more games than ever before, etc.

The only other college apparel I have besides Alabama is a Cincinatti t shirt that my Aunt gave me when she worked there.

When did she work there? The school/campus has exploded in growth the last few years, it has become very nice. I love the city of Cincinnati

I think if you have no connection to the town (especially if a town or towns you DO have a connection to, have pro a pro team in the same league) it's sort of odd, and possibly really lame, depending on the particular circumstance.

There can be some acceptable caveats to this one, but it's a decent enough general truism. You can't go to one SEC undergrad, and claim another one as your team, though.

A lot of people in New Orleans went to schools like UNO, Loyola, Xavier, etc.
None of these schools have football teams, and most of them could care less about Tulane, a school with mostly out-of-state enrollment.
Most of em root for LSU because LSU is the big Louisiana school. How is that not legit?

I don't think the author is using the correct term in his argument. He's not describing a bandwagon fan, he's describing a disgruntled one.
It's OK to abstain from watching your favorite team, not going to games, not buying their apparel, etc if you don't like the on the field/court/rink product.
That's different from pulling for team A, switching to team B when A has a down spell and coming back to team A when they bounce back. People who do that are panty waste and shouldn't be taken seriously in any discussion about sports.
