We went 1,600 miles in two days, with the first chunk of that 1,300 miles by driving all night and the next day (had four adults to switch off driving).

If there are enough drivers, I like leaving the night before, especially with kids because they can sleep all night and a lot of ground can be covered fast.

Don't take those yellow jacket energy pills while drinking red bull.

I drove that distance once before and my stomach finally had enough when I got to the chick's house I was staying at in Hammond for the night. Ruined everything.

drove from Gonzales to Vermont to bring my son back to school - drive was nice did it about 4 days wasn't in a rush stopped and visited Gettysburg and a few areas in Tn,PA, NY etc.
Wasn't really a road trip as we weren't in a rush - on the way back I was by myself and that was a different situation - 2 days.

3,000+ miles, 2 month long

Did you walk? lol. 3,000 miles over 2 months is not that bad. I'm sure a lot of us put well over 3,000 miles on our vehicles in 2 months commuting to and from work. He's not asking for advice on commuting, he's asking for advice on taking a long haul road trip.

That being said:

1. Snacks / Energy drinks / water loaded up before you leave
2. Podcasts, music, etc...
3. Paper maps (or maps downloaded to your phone) in case you get lost somewhere w/ no cell signal. This saved my arse once in rural Tennessee.
4. You'll make better time than Google says you will. Plan a stop somewhere along the route for an hour or two. It will help break things up and let you relax a little bit (possible nap time?).

1,600 miles here in a couple days.

What are your personal do's and dont's for a road trip like this?

Mucho gracious

Go balls out on day one - minimum 12-14 hours, so your second day doesn't suck.

I drove from BR to Connecticut and a balls out day one allowed for a detour to Cooperstown on day 2.

For super long road trips, I like to leave around 4 AM. You get decent sleep the night before, you drive as the sun rises, and by the time you hit noon, you should have covered some serious ground. That way, you can still get your 12-14 hours in without driving until 10 PM. Eat a good dinner, get up and hit it again.

ETA:

Try to time hitting known shitty traffic cities (Houston, Atlanta) at off-peak times. I also like to set a "hell or high water" point for the first day (e.g. I'm going to get AT LEAST this far today, no matter what.) If you get there super early, go a couple more hours.

That might be balls out for one of your trips, but for this guy 12-14 hours is barely half of the 1,600 mile drive. He's probably going to want to push for 16-18 hours on day 1.

The wife and I are driving her furniture and all down from NYC starting on 12/24. We're downloading lots of stand-up comedy bits (they will help keep you awake because you have to pay attention and laughter helps fight off sleep, whereas music can sometimes lull you to sleep) and some trivia tests to try and guess at.

Current recordings:
Sam Kinnison
Robin Williams
Daniel Tosh

hoping to get some Bob Saget too

Plan ahead, if your cell coverage works in all the areas you will be driving through download the Waze app and program it with your destination. It can be useful for routing around traffic problems.

Check the weather map for the region to give you an idea if you'll be driving through a monsoon, sneauxpacolypse, etc.

If you eat healthy, bring food with you otherwise stopping for a bite may end up having to make an emergency stop later due to raging shits.

Pay attention to your gas. Once you get around 1/4 a tank start looking for a place to fill up. It's better to get that done sooner rather than running on fumes and hoping there's a station nearby when you are in completely unfamiliar territory.

Go with friends. The more random place you can stop the better. Energy drinks. Have a change of shirt and deodarant handy because you will stink after pounding energy drinks.

And download the podcast Serial.

in college I drove with some friends to Crested Butte Co from Tuscaloosa.

We got in the car, drove 24 hours non-stop to CB, ski'ed for one day, got back in the car and drove back to Tuscaloosa. Most memorable MLK day weekend ever.

the comedy bits are good. Time your stops to do/see something easy/fun. Go to a good regional restaurant/drive though the downtown of a new city/notable college campus.
