I have to disagree... I think it's a solid movie. He does some real similar things to Goodfellas... The story arc taking you from his humble beginnings, making you want to be the guy, to the spin out of control, to the fall. The narration, the breaking the fourth wall, some of the camera techniques... I agree it's too long and a little over the top, but to say it's a bad movie is ridiculous.

I'm not sure how anyone could say it is a terrible movie. Anything that becomes popular on ANY of these boards on tiger droppings becomes "Over rated" or it "Sucks" this place will brain wash you any and every REAL human being I have talked to about this movie loved it.

1) I agree with you typically that hype and anti-hype can ruin movies by brainwashing you. I have championed that cause many times on here.

2) We hang out with different people obviously because everyone I have talked to about tWoWS said it was fricking horrible.

3) It is fricking horrible. I am not saying this to be contrarian or seem edgy. It is a terrible movie, plain and simple. It is Scorsese masturbating on screen for an overextended period of time, like he often does, about a guy with no redeeming qualities going through sometimes hilarious but often just stupid moments in his life. It is "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell" with Leonardo DiCaprio and the fat guy from Superbad directed by the guy who did Goodfellas. It should have been wrapped up in 2 hours, max. Instead, for an entire hour and a half more, you get bludgeoned to death by this frickwad's antics all to find out that what you've been building toward storywise, this guy's massive fall, doesn't really happen. It is a huge letdown in the climax of the story, whether real or not, and it makes the audience feel cheated. Moreover, given that it was overly long, you would expect the pay off to be even better than normal, but it wasn't.

Put it this way: I would have walked out about 2 hours in but for the fact that it stars Leo and Jonah Hill, was directed by Scorsese, had a lot of hot chicks in it, was hyped to hell and back, and I had already spent $12 on the fricking ticket. I kept thinking, "Surely this will pay off. Surely." Had I been watching it at home, I probably would have turned it off. It was terrible.

I figured the opening scene when he was snorting coke out of a stripper's arse would have been enough

Sweet Mary, the number of people who don't understand what he is doing in this scene fricking baffles me. He's blowing the coke up her a-hole.

That's sort of the point. There is no payoff: he gets away with it, essentially, and he gets to keep going to sales seminars in which he's treated like a god. It's why we have the shot of the FBI agent riding on the subway in his cheap sit, all alone. there are no plaudits, no big reward: the machine keeps rolling. It will just be another douchebag gaming the system. The lack of punishment and climax is the basis of the condemnation of the whole system.

GoodFellas is the clear companion piece, and pretty much everyone in that film is punished severely. The crimes in Wolf are arguably worse, and more devastating to the larger economy, but because they are in suits, they largely escape punishment. The Luftansa heist is nowhere near what these guys pulled off.

I liked how over the top the kovie is, and yes, it's long and exhausting. That's also the point. These guys can have anything, and they are never truly happy. They spend the entire day in a drug induced haze just to deal with reality. The party seems like it will be fun, but it literally never stops, and it just seems exhausting. They just go through the motions after awhile, and they've lost any ability to enjoy their success. there's also the simple matter that these guys aren't that bright. They aren't genius hucksters, they are petty thieves, only do it with millions of dollars. they are so short sighted, they get in a fight in the parking lot over a briefcase.

But really, the whole movie is explained in the lunch sequence with Mark Hanna, in which he tells Leo the purpose of Wall st is to move your clients' money from their pockets to yours. The system is designed graft. It is scathing indictment, and one of Scorcese's best films.

I tend to disagree with your film opinions, Baloo. But in this instance, you are spot on!

O I know it's the point, and i also understand why Scorsese continued to bludgeon you, but that doesn't mean it's a good movie. It just means it was a bad movie that was executed in a way the director felt conveyed his message best when the truth was it simply made the movie unbearable. But Scorsese has never been one for subtlety, so what can you expect? Everything he does, he does with a two minute long wink and a forearm shiver to your head.

The problem is the people who want to make the movie out to be more than this.

Wolf of Wall St and American Hustle were so overrated.

It's hard for a movie with this much gratuitous nudity to bore me as much as Wolf of Wall Street. Occasionally it has some moments but overall it was mostly just tedious. If it were truly bad it might have been more interesting.
