How did Kevin Smith get Johnny Depp to play a role in Tusk?

Seems a little lowbrow for Johnny but at least he was the funniest part in it.

Depp did 21 jump street, and dresses up like a pirate in most of his movies....I don't think his brow is as high as you think

PotC movies are great big budget movies that rake in millions that he also gets paid millions to do. Not Tusk level.

Depp was sad that Wes Craven didn't ask him to be in New Nightmare. Craven didn't ask b/c he thought Depp was too big to consider doing it.
He's probably more fun than his dreary Burton roles make him seem.
