Re watching Deadwood for the first time in years. I am convinced.

We've witnessed some of the best television ever made in the years since I last watched Deadwood and taking all of that into consideration, I believe that the dialogue written for Al Swearengen on this show is the best writing for a character in the history of television. Everything that comes out of his mouth is gold. A lot of it is like a puzzle where you have to think about what he just said because it isn't clear, straight dialogue. It's genius writing.

Loved the show. There were some aspects later in the show that I could've done without, but it was just interesting and solid for all three seasons. I watched it within the last year and I'll always think it's a shame they cancelled it when they did. I know it was expensive to make, but the potential story lines were endless with a setting like that. M
Fantastic show.
Fantastic show.

My wife loved The Wire but has never watched Deadwood. She saw me watching it the other night and asked me what it was. I said Deadwood isn't about the police and criminals necessarily but it's kind of like The Wire in the old west: It has amazing characters, writing and acting and doesn't hold your hand while it constantly jumps around between numerous, amazing plot lines.

Not sure there has been anything better than those first two seasons.

I'm watching it for the first time, finishing season 2 tonight. And I agree that the writing is as good as any show I've ever seen. The profanity makes it easy to overlook just how subtle and brilliant a lot of the dialogue is. It's not just Swearengen, EB has some great dialogue too that is almost Shakespearean. One thing that is interesting is the writers really don't put any effort into keeping anachronisms out of the writing. "Hooplehead, taint, get some strange", there are others too.

Al Swearengen cusses better than any TV character.
The actor is great. When you see him not in character, he is a grinning, giggling, goofy guy, totally unlike Al.
