About 1,000 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division will deploy to Iraq in late January, the Defense Department announced Friday.
The soldiers from 3rd Brigade Combat Team will train, advise and assist Iraqi security forces as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, said Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby during a briefing Friday.
The paratroopers are preparing to deploy for a nine-month tour.
An additional 300 troops from all the services, most of them enablers, also will deploy soon, Kirby said.
The deployment of these 1,300 troops is part of a 1,500-troop increase authorized in November by President Obama as the U.S. expands its fight against the Islamic State.
There are about 1,600 troops in Iraq now, including the 1st Infantry Division headquarters.
"I'm very proud of the paratroopers of the 3rd BCT," said Maj. Gen. Richard Clarke, the commanding general of the 82nd Airborne Division, in a statement. "They have extensive knowledge and experience in training and are disciplined and ready soldiers. They are a dedicated group who will share the high training standards and tactical expertise of leaders in the 82nd Airborne Division to train and assist the Iraqi Security Forces and enable them to defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant."
Also deploying from the 3rd BCT, 82nd Airborne are about 250 paratroopers from 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment. These soldiers, whose deployment was announced previously, are expected to deploy in late December. They are not part of the 1,500-troop increase. Instead, they are expected to replace troops already in theater.
These soldiers also are slated for a nine-month deployment.

Can we please just quit in Iraq? Hand it over to a UN force, at least.

Imagine if we could go back to 2003 and try to sell this to the public.
"ARE YOU READY TO KICK SOME frickING HUSSEIN arse, MERICA? GIMME A HELL YEAH!"
"HELL YEAH!!!"
"ARE YOU READY TO BE THERE FOR THE NEXT 12 GODDAMN YEARS?? GIMME ANOTHER HELL YEAH!"
"Wait, wut..."

Are paratroopers' boots technically "on the ground?"

Classic

No because they will be using hover boards to keep from touching the ground.

Insert obligatory "all wearing Birkenstocks" joke here.

I'm so glad that I am no longer in the Army.

WTF is an 'enabler' in this context?

The Middle East is rich with oil and weak in military and common sense. You may hate to admit it, but President Bush was a genius. We have our toehold.

Boots in the air, not on the ground!

Wait, I thought this war was over and we were just sending "advisors"
This jargon of advisors has all the old folks hoodwinked. Even my grandmother has said it's "great that we're training the Iraqi Army" As if our soldiers were sitting around for the last 6 years playing solitaire.

To do what? Get killed and captured until we have to go in and rescue them? frick that.
Either get out/stay out, or don't leave until victory is secure.
Half-measures just get more people killed.

Part of an "enabling" force. It's to avoid calling non-combat troops, non-combat.
Plus, there are no front lines anymore. "Enablers" main mission is not to engage in direct combat with the enemy, but "enable" those that do.
(And to the other poster - no buddy, we haven't spoken English in a long time - it's one of the things that make us cool and awesome - military jargon - got to get me some of that.)
