What this song is about... if I agree with you I'll donate $20 dollars to your charity.

To me this is one of the greatest, if not the greatest songs every written.. Originally I don't think it meant that much to Paul Simon... and it may not have had the meaning originally that it took on over time... at least not the meaning that it now portrays to me. I'm sure it's been scrutinized all over the internet A LOT.... but if you would like some money donated to your charity please take the time to break down this song line for line and let me know what it means to you...
My purpose for doing so is that I think it is a great song, portrays great meaning, and is a great piece of poetry that deserves people analyzing....
FLAME ON!!!

A delusional magician who is an embarrassment to his family has a temporary moment of clarity in which he reflects upon a highly regrettable decision.

I'll bite.
Having done a bit of reading, just now, Paul Simon was 22-23 years old when he wrote it. Simon and Garfunkel had been singing together for about ten years by then. I read Simon's explanation for the song and it leaves a lot to be desired. I would imagine that after ten years of writing songs and being so young that he probably wasn't aware of the impact the words would have.
But that wasn't what you asked. What does it mean to me?
I enjoy silence and solitude. The people in this world wear me out. They either love the sound of their own voices, or they are desperate to be understood. I'm not sure which. Usually the people with the most to say, the ones who could really bring something to the table, are the ones who don't feel the need to. Contemplation and meditation are their way. Other people choose to be silent because they are misunderstood. Either way, if they carry on like this for too long it isn't good for anyone. Because, without them saying the important things, the "people bow and pray" to utter shite materialist crap like the Kardashians and Real Housewives and wind up being as ridiculous as my avatar.
The last verse is a conundrum, because I don't watch these crap shows and listen to crap music, but somehow I doubt that they suggest I find wisdom on "subway walls and tenement halls." But maybe some days they do a have a moment of clarity, or maybe their sheer stupidity should be a warning.
tl/dr: To quote Garfunkel ""the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other."
