Has there ever been another movie that was filmed, promoted and then pulled at the last minute, never to see the light of day? I can't remember this ever happening.

Clockwork Orange in the UK was cancelled after an initial release - and then banned for 27 years.

Jerry Lewis made a movie called The Day the Clown Cried that was never released:

The Day the Clown Cried

quote:

The Day the Clown Cried is an unreleased 1972 film directed by and starring Jerry Lewis. It is based on a script of the same name[1] by Joan O'Brien, who had co-written the original script with Charles Denton ten years previously.[2] The film was met with controversy regarding its premise and content, which features a circus clown who is imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp. The Day the Clown Cried has become somewhat infamous among film historians and movie buffs as a film that has never officially been released.

quote:

In January 1973, Lewis stated publicly that the film was in final production, it had been invited to the Cannes Film Festival in May, and it would be released in America after that

quote:

Lewis offered the opinion that it was all bad, an artistic failure because "I lost the magic". Quoted in Entertainment Weekly: "You will never see it. No one will ever see it, because I am embarrassed at the poor work."

This has actually happened plenty of times,

That Terry Gilliam Don Quixote film was one I really wanted to see.

But he only filmed a few scenes before funding was pulled.

It wasn't a complete movie - in the can.

Boondock Saints had a pretty unheralded release due to 9/11.

That's all I got.

Yeah I kind of cheated on that one, but the latest I heard on that project was that enough of the movie was filmed that the returning to it was always a viable option.
