Is the NFL Officially a Passing League? (Data Inside)

I was curious to see exactly how different the league is today in comparison to what it was like 35 years ago.
In addition, I also included a few rule changes that could have had an effect on the increased scoring/passing stats (1994 is by far the most interesting set of rule changes, coming on the heels of the 1991-1993 seasons)
To make it easier to analyze the data, I colored each cell based on what the average was between 1980-2014.
Green = above the average
Red = below the average

There is an elite tier of QBs that can throw for big yards every week. The rest of the teams are just hoping to land a QB that can do that. Bad strategy.

seems like pace is the most indicative variable to scoring, rushing, and total yardage
