Who: UAB Blazers
When: Thursday, December 18 - 8:00pm
Where: Birmingham, AL - Bartow Arena (8,500, 132nd NCAA)
How:
***TV: CBS-S (In BR - ATT1643, Dish158, DTV221, CoxNONE. For others check HERE.)
***Radio: 98.1FM
***Stream: None (That I'm aware of, will continue looking)

LSU has been playing some really good basketball, however, LSU goes to Birmingham with some serious question marks. Neither Josh Gray (ankle sprain) nor Tim Quarterman (Knee) have been practicing this week due to injury. I'd say at this point, Gray is unlikely to play while Quarterman is questionable at best. Even if Quarterman is able to go, there is a chance Coach Jones starts Patterson due to his love for the "spark" Quarterman can bring off the bench.

Luckily, UAB isn't a very good team because if LSU cannot play either of their PG's they will be in some serious trouble, both offensively and defensively.

Projected UAB Starters:

Robert Brown (6'5" 190 Jr) 29.3MPG, 12.4PPG, 3.9RPG, 2.7APG
Denzell Watts (6'2" 207 So) 15.9MPG, 2.2PPG, 1.8APG, 82%FT, 18.5%FG
Tyler Madison (6'4" 225 So) 19.5MPG, 9.3PPG, 3.5RPG, 53%FG
William Lee (6'9" 210 Fr) 15.3MPG, 3.3PPG, 3.3RPG, 35.7%FG
Tosin Mehinti (6'9" 213 So) 24MPG, 7.6PPG, 4.0RPG, 52.6%FG

Projected LSU Starters:

Jalyn Patterson (6'0" 173 Fr) 13.6MPG, 2.2PPG, 2.0RPG, 1.0APG, 28%FG
Keith Hornsby (6'4" 210 Jr) 35MPG, 12.7PPG, 5.0RPG, 2.3APG, 37.2%3PT
Jarell Martin (6'10" 236 So) 35.2MPG, 15.9PPG, 9.3RPG, 75%FT
Jordan Mickey (6'8" 235 So) 34.5MPG, 16.3PPG, 10.1RPG, 2.1APG, 2.4BPG, 53.2%FG
John Odo (6'10" 245 Sr) 12.6MPG, 2.9PPG, 1.6RPG, 61.5%FG

The most interesting aspect of this game may be how LSU copes with the possible loss of their only two PG's. I'm not sure there has been a moment of this season where Quarterman and Gray were both on the bench, and we will likely see 40 minutes of that very lineup on Thursday night.

If Quarterman cannot go, I expect a heavy dose of Jalyn Patterson at the PG. Johnny Jones said he may be forced to play Jarell Martin at the 2 on occasion, so when Patterson sits, you could see Hornsby playing PG with Martin or Epps playing at the 2. I fully expect to see some Epps for the first time since he played 3 minutes against Weber St almost a month ago.

UAB Schedule/Results:

ULM 74 @ UAB 65 (Loss)
Young Harris 81 @ UAB 94 (Win)
South Florida 73 @ UAB 71 OT (Loss)
Jackson St 50 @ UAB 58 (Win)
Wisconsin 72 vs UAB 43 (Loss)
Florida 56 vs UAB 47 (Loss)
UCLA 88 vs UAB 76 (Loss)
Morehead St 48 @ UAB 58 (Win)
Illinois St 78 @ UAB 74 (Loss)
UNC Asheville 71 @ UAB 79 (Win)

UAB has really struggled on offense this season. As a team they shoot under 30% from three point range, under 46% from two point range, and under 69% from the free throw line. They have also allowed a ton of offensive rebounds and LSU should be able to take advantage there.

The Blazers also use a 10 player rotation. With LSU possibly down two players, I could see LSU really getting tired down the stretch run. UAB does not have a single player who averages over 30 minutes per game.

Keys to Victory:

Second Chance Points: LSU has been good getting offensive rebounds and UAB has been bad allowing far too many. Could this be the way LSU is able to get their offense going without a true PG? Absolutely.

Staying Out of Foul Trouble: Likely down two of their top five players, LSU cannot afford to get into foul trouble. A couple quick fouls by Martin or Mickey could lead to a monumental collapse in this one. The Tigers cannot pick up any silly fouls and expect to stay in this one.

Get to the Free Throw Line: Jarell Martin has been excellent at getting to the free throw line this year, but LSU needs Mickey and Hornsby to step up their game driving to the rim as well. Hornsby will have the ball in his hands much more often than usual in this one, which could translate to more FT attempts.

Prediction:

LSU is only 1-2 when scoring under 70 points this year, but I think this one bucks that trend...

LSU 68, UAB 58

Good analysis. I like our chances if we're rested and healed up.

What I heard on the radio this morning seemed encouraging. Looks like Quarterman and Gray won't be out too long. Gray may be back sooner than expected.

That's great to hear.

I'm not expecting either out very long, but the fact that neither have been practicing scares me.

Jones was quoted saying:

"...There’s a good chance that Tim could be available for us Thursday.”

Yeah, I heard the same on 104.5 this morning. I'm still of the opinion that the coaches won't rush either of them. If TQ is back, it may be just for a bit. He's so lanky I'd get worried about another mishap. Gray may not be back as soon as we want him because of the competition we have ahead (that's not to say JJ is taking these teams lightly). Don't wanna rush these kind of injuries.

Quarterman seems like he'll be back soon, even if he does miss tomorrow. Gray was out of his boot and off of his crutches already.

It'll be good for the rest of the team to get some quality minutes.

Yep. I see Patterson and Epps getting a pretty significant jump in minutes. I'd expect some more Bridgewater also. Jones said it was not out of the realm of possibility to play either Epps or Martin at the 2 spot so that shows you how willing Jones is to move those guys out and add some others on the inside.

Will Jones finally be forced to give Malone and Robinson a chance?

I expect to see a ton of Bridgewater after UABs starting forwards go out.

Entire Johnny Jones UAB Media Brief:

quote:

HEAD COACH JOHNNY JONES

Opening Statement …
“We are looking forward to another really challenging game Thursday at UAB, the same team that last year about this time knocked off a ranked University of North Carolina Tar Heel basketball team at UAB. It will certainly be a great challenge for us. They have played some really close games this year against a lot of really tough competition. It’s going to give us an opportunity to go on the road after another victory here at home to see if we can to continue to improve. We may be a little bit hampered because of injuries, and it may cause us to shuffle our lineup a little bit and put us in a different position. At certain times this year, we have had adversity or something has been different for us, and our kids have done an excellent job of filling that void and being able to fight through it. We are going to possibly be presented with that same type of challenge on Thursday night.”

On the status of Josh Gray and Tim Quarterman…
“Both guys were treated. Neither of them practiced (Monday). (Tuesday), they have gone through treatment. We had a visit as a team at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital to go the children’s ward, and neither of those guys was able to accompany us there because of being treated. We will know a little bit more about both (later Tuesday).”

On Josh Gray’s injury…
“ … Outside of what had been reported earlier that he had a sprain. Nothing more has been said about it. We will have to wait and find out later on this afternoon if there is anything more to it or not.”

On Tim Quarterman’s injury…
“Tim (Quarterman) got a little banged up toward the end of the game (against Sam Houston State). He’s been treated the same as Josh (Gray). Both have been off. There’s a good chance that Tim could be available for us Thursday.”

On the ripple effect if both cannot play…
“We would have to possibly move Jarell (Martin) to some two-guard if that happens and insert someone else there at the three. It could be one of several guys, but it could be possibly Aaron Epps, who is healthy now and would possibly have to play more minutes out there for us. It’s certainly going to present a challenge to us. It’s early in the season, and it’s just like everything else. It’s going to force some other guys to have to play. When that has occurred, guys have done an excellent job … (Brian) Bridgewater, Jalyn (Patterson) ... When those guys have had to play extended minutes for us, they have done a good job.”

On Jalyn Patterson’s style of play…
“It’s a little bit different, probably not as aggressive. He’s a good ball handler, good passer and can get the ball from A to B. He doesn’t take a lot of chances; a very capable scorer. He’s been in that position before. It just hasn’t been at this level for any stretches of time. We are very confident in him and in the role that he may have to play. The only difference is talking about the number of minutes because Jalyn has been injured as well. It’s going to depend on the depth and how long he can possibly go and the pace he can possibly go with this team.”

On qualities that Aaron Epps brings to the team…
“Aaron Epps brings length on the perimeter. In addition, he’s a capable rebounder, capable scorer from the three spot for us. He’s long, active and can get his hands on some balls. It’s going to take him a little while because he hasn’t been in the rotation or hadn’t been playing any minutes. It’s going to be different for him.”

On if the team has bad luck with injuries…
“I think 85 percent of the teams around the country could possibly say the same thing. When guys go hard and are competing at a certain level, unfortunately, those things happen. You battle with injury. I think it’s a sign of a good team when they are able to make adjustments and have guys and be able to get through it. It forces your team to grow up. It forces you to make some decisions early on in the season that may be beneficial for you in the latter part of the year because of the experience you had early on because of injuries.”

On performance on the road…
“I think the West Virginia game would help with a tough venue that we will be facing in conference play and playing at UAB. Any time you go on the road, it’s different. It’s different for your team, and it’s a learning experience for them. We have been at neutral sites, and we will be playing in two pretty good venues on the road prior to conference play. I think it’s good. It was good for our scheduling and will certainly be good for our guys.”

On the visit to Our Lady of the Lake’s Children’s Wing…
“I thought it was really good for our guys to have an opportunity to go to Our Lady of the Lake today and have an opportunity to interact with the kids and the families that are there. To see the families and the kids with their smiles on their face and our kids to be able to put some joy into their hearts and see the smiles on their faces made a difference. They knew they were making a difference, and that’s what it is all about. I think our guys understand that they are blessed. It’s a blessing to be a blessing to others. I think they were able to see that and share in that today.”

How realistic is it we see a walk on play some spot minutes tomorrow night, we have 3 guard walk ons.

Prolly not due to needing guards over bigs. More likely to see Epps over those two unless they feel Mickey can man the 3 for stretches.

Coach played Eddlestone in real minutes in the Virgin Islands, but I think Jones trusts Big Eddle more than any of the guard walkons...

I feel like he would just go really large and bring on a less used forward.

I could easily see us going 1G4F for extended time.

I hope we get Malone in there. I still really like his potential as an offensive threat. As long as Jones is okay playing Epps and Martin at the 2, I see adding another C as a possibility.
