Go all the way to the end of the article after the councilman's poke at the Library's Green efforts:

quote:

He said the library should lower its millage in next year’s tax elections because it already has so much money, a sentiment Councilman Buddy Amoroso also chimed in on with the Facebook thread.

The library system receives all of its money from a dedicated property tax, which Baton Rouge voters approve every 10 years. The tax will go up for renewal again next year.

Heck said other falling-apart Baton Rouge institutions deserve some of the money that the library has been collecting for dozens of years.

I like the concept of libraries, but I'm not sold on the idea of building grand edifices to hold sizeable collections of books and documents on paper anymore. It is time to begin thinking about building libraries dedicated to electronic storage of books and documents.

Same here, and exactly when is enough enough???

Are we to renew library taxes and build library after library after library as long as they have the money?

Do we need a library on every corner? Remember, we have libraries in all the schools, right?

And are libraries like they were in the 60s, and 70s now becoming obsolete?

That's exactly where we're headed with the last bond issue but it's been tough weaning the good citizens of Baton Rouge from their dead trees. The new downtown library faced fierce opposition because, among other things, it was going to be paperless.

People keep renewing the millage because BR's Library system is quietly one of the best in the nation. They are stockpiling that extra cash because they just built a massive new library on Goodwood and are about to build a new downtown library as well. Basically, the people keep paying for the libraries because they actually are delivering a great product. It's one of the few things BR's government actually kinda runs well. The main other thing is BREC, which outside of their floundering with golf-courses, is pretty outstanding.

We have great libraries in BR, but the age of the library is ending. Today, more often than not they're de facto homeless shelters anyway.

While I agree with this, it's always good to question the need for continuing to fund it at the current level. I do use the library often so I don't mind paying what I pay to get what I do out of it.

I agree, I think the millage should be reduced some, but at least we get to see the fruits of our tax dollars unlike CATS.

For all the money they have, Baton Rouge should have the best library system in the region.

BREC would be outstanding if their budget was 25% of what it is.

Your location is "St Amant, LA". Why are you complaining about "our tax dollars" for a Baton Rouge city property tax?

FWIW, I will vote against the library tax renewal when it comes up in 2015.

The library I visit every month or so is always very busy. A lot of people use the public library. Keep that in mind.

It was also hideous.

We do without a doubt. And the library is moving steadily to electronic documents. I've checked out hundreds of books during the last few years without ever setting foot in a library. My mother-in-law lives in Florida and the library system there is like that of a third-world country.

This was the main source of opposition

It was also a Trey Trahan design, so you know it was going to be over-budget, unworkable, and leak like a sieve
