Anyone have thoughts on these? I'm looking at Vox Tonelab, and Boss ME 50/70/80. I don't like the Digitechs since they are programmed; the Boss and Vox have knobs to turn which is a lot more comfortable for me. And I have no interest in blowing $150 a pop on a bunch of "boutique" pedals.

I've had the Boss ME-50 for about 7 years now and never had a problem with it. Does more than I need and then some. The Ibanez Tube Screamer pedal is solid too, but only if you're looking for that warm tube sound.

can't stand multi effects pedals. I string a tuner, wah, distortion, and delay in that order on pedalboard with a splitter for up to 4 guitars. kinda want a phaser but keep putting it off.

Used one of these for a while. Never used all of its functionality, but you could get some pretty far out sounds by using the delay pedal on the ME-50, running through a stand alone delay pedal running through a loop station. I would say just get one, you'll get some mileage out of it.

Because they're widely considered "uncool" or for functionality reasons?

For shredding at the house, they are fun. However, if you're obsessed with your sound (like I, unfortunately, am), you may feel a little handcuffed by the lack of customization options. For instance, if you have a distortion setting, at best you'll probably have a small range of distortion. If you had a single distortion pedal (say a Metal Master), you have a very wide range of distortion options to fit a wide variety of sounds. It's really up to you, but it sounds like you only want to spend a little bit, so go with a multi-effects. Vox usually makes some good products.
