LSU Basketball Week in Review WE 12/14/14
Posted on 12/15/14 at 9:25 am
Posted on 12/15/14 at 9:25 am
I'll try and do an overview of how LSU fared in the previous week each Monday to help put everything into perspective.
Record last week: (1-0)
Streak: 4 wins in a row
Top performer: Jordan Mickey (38 minutes, 21 points, 15 rebounds, 4 blocks, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 turnovers)
Cause for Concern: Early in the second half of LSU's victory over Sam Houston St, starting PG, Josh Gray, left the court with what appeared to be an ankle injury. He later went to the locker room and did not return to the bench. While Coach Jones did not come out and give a timeline for Gray's return, he did make it sound like LSU would be without his services for at least a couple weeks.
Top Team Stat of Week: LSU only turned the ball over 7 times against Sam Houston St. Three times this year LSU has had a single player with at least 7 turnovers so having a game that clean was very nice. Especially after committing 24 turnovers in their previous game.
Rankings and Standings: CBS RPI (16th), ESPN RPI (15th), KenPom (72nd), playoffstatus.com tournament chances (71%)
Breaking the trend: After starting the season making only 1 of his first 19 three point attempts, Jarell Martin hit both of his three point attempts against Sam Houston St. He rose his percentage from 5.2% to 14.3%.
Best game by a non Big5 player: Against Sam houston St, freshman guard, Jalyn Patterson racked up 24 minutes, 4 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and only 1 turnover. He was asked to play more than usual due to the loss of Gray in the game.
LSU Opponent who made noise: Clemson completed a 3 game sweep of the SEC when they defeated Auburn 72-61 at home. The Clemson Tigers have defeated LSU (64-61), Arkansas (68-65), and Auburn (72-61). Clemson is suppose to be a bottom of the barrel ACC team, and the SEC's performances against Clemson could really hurt the league come March.
Interesting Stat of the Week: Keith Hornsby has only turned the ball over 15 times in 315 minutes of action. That is 1 turnover every 21 minutes of action which is very good for someone who handles the ball as much as he does.
LSU Scorers this week:
Mickey 21
Hornsby 16
Martin 14
Quarterman 11
Gray 4
Patterson 4
Bridgewater 4
Odo 2
SEC Standings:
Kentucky 11-0
LSU 7-2
Arkansas 7-2
Texas A&M 7-2
Alabama 6-2
Vanderbilt 6-2
Ole Miss 6-3
Miss St 5-3
Georgia 5-3
South Carolina 5-3
Florida 6-4
Tennessee 4-3
Missouri 5-5
Auburn 3-5
Biggest SEC win of week: On Sunday, Tennessee beat #15 Butler 67-55 at home. After trailing 34-25 at halftime, Tennessee won the second half 42-21 to grab the 12 point victory. Honorable Mention goes to Kentucky's 84-70 win over #21 UNC.
Worst SEC defeat of week: It was a pretty clean week for the SEC, but Ole Miss lost at home to Western Kentucky 81-74. After beating a good Oregon team on the road the week before, the Rebels really choked away a good start with the loss to (4-4) Western Kentucky.

We got UAB on the road Thursday and Charleston at home on Monday. Gotta win them both and keep the streak going.

What's up with ken pom rankings? He just a hater or what?
Does lunardi do projections yet? TIA

Thanks for the review!
I hope we can sweep the next four and be healthy when we begin conference play on 1/8/15. With a non-stop televised schedule and the #1 recruit coming in next year, we have a great opportunity to restore some magic to the Deaf Dome.

His algorithm is pretty extensive, but I do feel like it is missing some pertinent data. We were really low in our pre-season ranking because his data does not take into account transfers and we have two of our top players not included in the preseason rankings.
KenPom is definitely not an LSU hater. He has forwardly said he loves Coach Jones as a coach in a blog post last year so I know that's not it.
Honestly, if you look at how LSU has performed it does make sense. He takes into account margin of victory and LSU hasn't really beat teams by a lot. Still not worried about it at this point.

Obligatory "that's just the way it is".

LSU's next 4 OOC games should be wins:
@UAB (197th)
Coll of Charleston (181)
Southern Miss (226)
Savannah St (316)
We will definitely see a pretty significant drop in RPI over this stretch but I think, even without Josh Gray we should be able to get thru it 4-0. Sam Houston St was a good win.
These last 6 OOC games have basically been a scale of hardest to easiest... We have made it thru the first 2 with wins and those two were the hardest of the last 6. I think SHSU at home was a tougher win than @UAB, but losing Gray could make that road win more impressive.
Our first two SEC games will be @ Missouri and vs UGA and which should be reasonable to win if we get Gray back. We really do need him back by Jan 8th so hopefully this ankle ins't bad.

I think a big part of the problem is that 1) LSU's offensive efficiency ranking isn't good (even compared to the rest of the SEC), and 2) LSU just hasn't played a great OOC schedule.

Other than UMass, LSU really hasn't looked great against any opponent thus far. Kenpom's rankings (while not 100% accurate) are generally a good indicator of how good a team is. There is a ton of time and opportunity for LSU to improve, but right now being ranked in the 70's isn't that surprising

I was looking at that this morning. It's hard to believe we are as low on offensive efficiency as we are. We were significantly higher last season. I think a major reason is that we have struggled to get to the free throw line and we haven't been good from 3 point land. I was really happy with the 7 turnovers against SHSU. I didn't think we would turn the ball over as much as we had in the first 8 games. I'm hoping the trend is to protecting the ball better.

Definitely agree. I'm not overly worried about it, but the only two games that really were good games for us has been UMASS and West Virginia. We moved from 95 to 71 in those two games which shows you we can still move pretty quickly with good wins.

I'm really worried about Quarterman's health. He looked a little iffy at times last game, against UMASS he left the game for a while and got treatment on his knee, then after the game he posted on IG with a brace on his knee and got lots of massages and therapy on it. He said he was "expecting the worst but praying for the best." With Gray out, if TQ were to get hurt or not be able to play at least 25 minutes we are in trouble. Even if it's just UAB and Charleston, I think both teams could trip us up if we don't have those guys.

Not having TQ and Gray at the same time would be a really troubling situation. Let's hope that both players are good and can go soon.

What would that do to the lineup? Patterson and Hornsby split time at PG? One of the walk-ons get some time? We'd be forced to play with 2 guards at most.

We really need Dominic Magee.

It's honestly a terrifying thought

I'd have to assume Hornsby and Patterson would play 1/2 pretty much 40min/gm and then we would rotate in Martin, Mickey, Odo, Epps, Bridgewater at 3-5. Could possibly move Epps to 2 for a small amount of time because Coach seems to really like him on the perimeter.
I was watching him warm up on Saturday (got to game 45 min early) and his shot isn't pretty, but it is so soft on the rim.

If TQ is out it will be really bad, but if he is only limited for a few weeks I think we can make it pass some of these teams. If Epps is healthy then he can add some minutes

I wish we could just have this answer soon. I'm not sure, but I believe he could be available as soon as Jan 14th. That's first day of classes. Would be a huge boost for us.
