Why are library services provided by government?

I know it's a miniscule issue and a local entity, but it always struck me as somewhat odd that libraries are owned and operated (most of the time) by the state.

Don't really have too much of an issue with it, but I am interested as to why the government came to be expected to provide the service.

Same reason for schools I suppose. They are both education related.

The internet just about makes brick and mortar libraries obsolete.

It's a service I'm fine with. Same goes for archives, but I'm into genealogy. If the state(s) didn't maintain them, the docs probably wouldn't survive, and I consider it a worthwhile public service to take care of all of that history.

I'd imagine that libraries take up such a small part of the budget, I don't see the issue with them.

Libraries do more than just rent books to customers.

And this is why I have a problem with today's libraries. Cities like BR pass taxes based on the premise that books and other reference materials are essential and that the public should have free access to them. I agree with that.

But then they use their bloated revenue streams to fund all sorts of other facilities, programs, and activities which are unrelated to books. If the public wants to fund meeting halls, venues for memorial services, promotion of cultural causes, edifices to the glory of politicians, then put that to a vote separately. Don't call it libraries, and then divert the money to those causes.

I've got a question for the board re: libraries. The Bossier Parish Library located in Bossier City has 6 librarians behind the counter. One is usually helping a patron while the other 5 try to look busy. This has been going on for years and everyone in Bossier jokes about it.

Is this the case where you live?
