What are the responsibilities of a head coach?

Dont think I've ever really understood the answer to this question completely. Obviously, you assemble your staff together (OC, DC, RC, position coaches) but what exactly does the head coach do after that? I mean wouldn't the offensive scheming be the responsibility of the offensive coordinator? Same as for the defensive scheming? Then with that you have the position coaches coaching up the players on the fundamentals and how to play their positions (right footwork, proper technique). Then with the recruiting coordinator being in charge of the recruiting, and the strength and conditioning coach being in charge of the players' fitness, what responsibilities does that leave Les with?
Essentially, can he really be blamed for the offensive troubles?
Can he be given any credit for our dominant defense the past ten years?

To lose as many games as possible and still keep his job so the ranters can stay happy.

Oversee everything. And have the final word. All the position coaches will give him their input and what not.

Anything that goes wrong is on Les, anything that goes rt was someone else. So basically in 2011 he took a vacation until January.

As one said above "To win." But also to do so without bringing dishonor onto the University.
The head coach is responsible for everything. Who calls the offensive play is up to him. There are a lot of different arrangements that could work. It doesn't matter if the coordinator calls the shots, or the head man does. The bottom line is: Win!

The HC job should be that of almost a General in the Armed Forces( for the lack of a better analogy). You have your 1 star gen(OC, HC), your colonels and majors(position coaches), and captains and lts(grad asst). They all work together to get the recruits(players), working and training on a certain philosophy and trying to become the most adhesive group they can be. The HC job is to set philosophy, handle the recruitment phases, be the overall face of the operation. Also to take the heat when operations go bad. But the biggest thing is he has final say as to what direction the program has.
To answer your last questions, Miles has been blamed for the offense since he got here...there are those who hate that saban left and will not give Miles any credit for the good he has accomplished here

I think it depends on the head coach...some will pay more attention to offense or defense or even special teams. Obviously the HC has the final say on everything. Some are more hands on than others. Some maybe more hands on with one position group, it varies.
