Was on IFC last night. Such a great movie. One of the funniest moments in the movie is when Dirk is singing "You've got the touch"

The opening scene is so money. I fricking love it

If there's a better scene in any movie than the "Sister Christian" scene, I want to see it.

This is one of those movies people loved or hated.
I loved it.
One of the better black comedies of the 90's.
I think you need to either be into late 70's/early 80's porn nostalgia, or enjoy laughing at peoples' misery to enjoy it.
I guess I'm the latter.

Fascinating read. But my problems with PTA are summed up by Elswit's quote (Dir. of Photography on the film):
PTA can't tell a coherent story to save his f'n life. He's got all of the pieces: he is a brilliant technician, he can write, he coaxes wonderful performances, and he creates brilliant scenes... they just never add up to the whole.
"It's really long and unfocused" should be on his tombstone.
quote:
Six months after we were done with Boogie Nights, Paul sent me a rough cut of the movie, or what he thought was really a director’s cut. I remember we were in our little house in England and I’m sitting there, looking at it, and Helen, my wife, gets up after an hour and a half and goes, “This is such a piece of shite. What the frick is this?” He had put every single thing that he loved in that movie and it was, cumulatively, just a disaster. But moment by moment it was wonderful, and you could see, God, there’s a movie there. I said that to Paul on the phone, “It’s a rough cut, right?” And he goes, “No. That’s what I want to do.” And I went, “Well, it’s really long and unfocused.” He didn’t talk to me for a long time after that. Dylan, bless his heart, Dylan forced Paul.

I've always assumed Burt Reynolds was kind of a dick in real life but after reading that it just proves it. Sounds like he wanted to kick everyone's arse on set.

That was a great read. I had heard Burt Reynolds didn't like making the movie, this kind of hammered it home. The stuff about none of the actresses wanting to deal with Nina Hartley was interesting. And I had heard that Leo DiCaprio was almost Dirk Diggler, didn't know that Joaquin Phoenix was considered for the role.

Yeah that kind of pissed me off a little. William H. Macy earned a lot of respect for me by treating her nice.
